    Alebrije carving of a blue dragon in the Isaias Jimenez’s studio located in the small town of Arrazola, about 4-miles southwest of Oaxaca.  Isaias continues the Oaxacan alebrijes style created by his father Manuel Jiménez Ramírez (who has his own Wikipedia page). Alebrijes are a style of brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of imaginary and mythical creatures. Protruding from the metal dashboard and supported by a small 2-inch diameter cylindrical post, the large white round wheel shows severe, deep cracks and flaking from age. In the upper right corner of the image the original thick glass windshield has broken in half vertically. Large rust spots pockmark the once white metal dashboard. Vines growing in from the open window entwine the interior of the cab, weaving through and around the steering wheel. Several of the vines are supple, fresh, and green; others dried and brown.

Streetlamps in front of 30-foot palm trees line the avenue and illuminate Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza and Cabos Cantina in the foreground. The street is completely empty as the black sky overhead slowly fades to dawn. At the end of the street, and in the center of the photograph, High Point Place, a 33-story high-rise condominium, faintly catches early rays of the rising sun.

  • Off the forward bow of our observation boat, a Hobie 16 catamaran under full sail hikes up out of the water in front of us. Leaning heavily to port, its forward starboard pontoon flies 4-5 feet in the air out of the blue Gulf of Mexico. Only the forward part of the white port-side pontoon is visible—the aft is buried deep in the water as the Hobie jets past us at 15-20 knots. The cat’s black mast leans 45-degrees to port, jib and mainsail stretched tight in the wind. The sailor closest to me in blue hikes out over the starboard side of the pontoon. His companion in yellow leans further out to starboard, tethered with a safety harness that keeps him from flying off the boat.

    Hiking Out

  • This landscape layout photo shows a street scene in Huatulco, Mexico. At the bottom of the image, we see the street, just above which there is a 9-inch curb and sidewalk. The back of the sidewalk intersects with an orange stucco wall at about 1/3 of the image height. A leafless tree trunk extends from the middle of the sidewalk up out of the top of the frame, branching into three smaller trunks in the upper third of the photo. On either side of the tree trunk two men lie asleep on their backs.     Huatulco Siesta

    Walking around Huatulco, Mexico, one afternoon, I turned the corner to find two men taking a sidewalk siesta in the afternoon heat.  This was one of those photographer moments when panic struck: can I get the camera up, shutter speed set, lens focused, and get the shot off before they stirred?  Yes!  Was it all that time behind the lens that paid off?  Probably not.  They were really zonked out.  (Or maybe a little bit of both.)  This is one of my favorite images from Mexico.  Image made while cruising Mexico in our sailboat 2000.

    Maui Pineapple Fields Forever

    Pineapple cultivation used to be one of the largest industries on Maui.  However, many pineapple businesses closed in the 2000s.  Although there has been a resurgence in pineapple farming with hybrid grafting techniques, scenes like this one from 2000 have largely disappeared.

    Plaza de la Danza

    People gather in the Plaza de la Danza (literally, "dance square") at dusk, adjacent to the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude in Oaxaca, Mexico. Families still gather socially in plazas and squares throughout Mexico. This plaza was very close to our hotel, so we walked past it almost every evening. I thought it was a quintessential Mexican scene: a plaza with families and friends adjacent to the church and lights twinkling on the distant mountain as twilight fades to night. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

The forward sailor trims the orange and white mainsail and jib into a tight reach as the salt water from the Gulf of Mexico foams up and sprays behind the cat. The aft sailor grips the black tiller rod, focusing intently on the horizon. The Gulf of Mexico comprises the lower two-thirds of the frame—a deep blue backdrop to the Hobie 16 as it passes us in a “swoosh.”

  • Horizontal photo of an albrijes carving—brightly colored Mexican folk-art sculptures—of a fantastical mythical red bull. We see his torso and head from the right side. Extremely fine detailed albrije patterns completely cover the bull's skin. Colorful patterned strips outline the mouth, nose, eye, and horns. Circular patterns radiate from the chest, side, and hump on the back. These intricate patterns include minute chevrons, diagonal lines, dots, smaller circles, dashes, and stripes in colors of red and orange with accents in yellow and blue. His pink nostril centers over a long, bright pink tongue, which sticks out from his open mouth. Brown horns, accented with similar patterns in dark browns and gold, curve forward and up over the bull's forehead.

    Red bull alebrijes carving in the Isaias Jimenez’s studio located in the small town of Arrazola, about 4-miles southwest of Oaxaca.  Isaias continues the Oaxacan alebrijes style created by his father Manuel Jiménez Ramírez (who has his own Wikipedia page). Alebrijes are a style of brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of imaginary and mythical creatures. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

  • Horizontal landscape of the backcountry road to Hana on the island of Maui, Hawaii. We look down an empty, deep lavender gray, two-lane country road which extends across the bottom left side of the image. The road curves to the right around a bend several hundred feet away in the center. Dark blue mountains, tinted purple, cut across the horizon—their ridgelines reach up into heavy gray overcast clouds. The mountains dip down slightly where the road turns around the bend, forming a wide V-shaped skyline. Tall pale mint-colored grass meadows line both sides of the road. On the right side of the photo, a steep hill, covered in multiple shades of pastel green grass, climbs up from the road into the cloudy sky. Several deciduous trees have grown through the thick grass carpet. The scene is one of quiet solitude awash in soft grey, green, and purplish-blue hues.

    Road to Hana

    During one of our many trips to Maui we rented a car and drove the back road to Hana, along Maui's north shore—including its 617 turns, 59 bridges, and over 52-miles of mostly dirt road.  This pastoral scene from the Hana Highway depicts Maui's serene landscapes. I love the quiet pastel mood of this photo.

  • Horizontal photo of a Mercedes Benz 1937 540K Special Roadster. In this closeup side shot of the front hood we see a series of parallel geometric shapes and lines. At the top of the image we see the polished silver painted side curve of the vehicle’s long hood. The middle 3/5s of the image shows silver chrome horizontal trim framing the top and bottom of two metal mesh grills with ¼-inch gaps. Two shiny 3-inch corrugated chrome metal pipes protrude from the top grill mesh. The pipes sweep backwards at a 20-degree angle and re-insert into the large silver painted fender. Without knowing this is a vehicle, the image appears to be an abstract of a highly polished art deco machine.

    Stairway to Heaven

    This was actually the stairway to the locker rooms at the Acapulco Yacht Club.  But 'Stairway to Heaven' sounds a bit more evocative.  Every morning, light flooded the top of the stairs, amplifying the orange walls and carpet.  Love those Mexican colors.  Image made while cruising Mexico in our sailboat 2000.
