White cumulus clouds form a puffy strip across the middle of the photo, just above the horizon line. Sailboats at anchor from another stripe of white just below the clouds. Beige sand, damp from a receding wave, fills the foreground. Huge boulder stacks, on the left and right side of the photo, reach half-way up into the image, and 100-feet out into the water. Crystal clear rippled wavelets cover the beige sand in the middle of the photo, stretching out into turquoise waters of Devil’s Bay.

  • This vertical photograph, taken in the Guna Yala region of Panama shows, multiple bands of sand, water, and sky: from light beige of the sandy beach at the bottom, to a darker beige where water recedes back into the ocean, to a light teal of the waves as they first make contact with the sandy beach, to a dark teal 30-feet away, to a dark blue on the ocean’s horizon, to a sky blue with a few white puffy clouds above the horizon. On the right side of the image, a mile or more away, we see two tiny islands just above the horizon line.

    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  We sailed the archipelago for a month anchoring at various islands, snorkeling, and exploring.  I love this shot because of nature's tropical gradients from white sand to sky blue.  Taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.
