This landscape photo, from the Guna Yala region of Panama, is taken from the perspective of standing on an island beach. In the lower 1/5 of the image we see a small flat wave receding from a dark mauve colored sand. The edge of the water ripples and foams as it pulls away from the beach. Above the receding wave, up to the horizon line in the middle of the photo, various shades of teal-colored water wrinkle from a soft breeze. In the middle of the photo, about 150-feet away, we see a ketch at anchor, its bow facing left into the wind. The setting sun, which is off camera to the right, illuminates the port side of the yacht in a soft golden light. Directly behind the sailboat, and perhaps another 100-feet distant, a small island with dark palm trees provides a backdrop to the bow, stern, and top of the glowing sailboat. A blue sky peeks through many clouds in the top half of the image. Clouds on the right side of the photo are also illuminated by the setting sun, which accents the blue sky with shades of gold, yellow, gray, and lavender.

The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  The only way to truly experience the islands is by sailboat, and we sailed them for a month. Walking the beach on one of these many islands, I looked up to see this ketch gently illuminated by the setting sun.  Shot while cruising the San Blas in our sailboat 2001.
