Each set of maracas has been carved with matching patterns (zigzags, pinwheels, nested arcs, clouds, and cactus leaves) and painted red with accent colors of dark lime green, dark teal, dark blue, and deep purple. Red wooden handles have been attached to each gourd. We can only see the maraca heads in the photo except for two maracas paired together vertically in the left third of the image—the maraca heads at the top of the image, and the handles at the bottom. This pair rests on other maraca heads underneath. Both red maracas have been carved with the words “El Salvador,” which have been painted in a dark blue around a carved-out background painted white.
