    Capesterre

  • Horizontal photo of a white door with full-length blue shutters on either side in coastal town of Grand-Bourg on Marie-Galante Island in the Caribbean. Two full length panes of rippled glass divide the white door, which appears in the right side of the image. The long shutters on either side of the door are built with narrow planks of wood, framed with two Z-shaped supports that zig zag across the inside of the shutters. The Z-shaped pieces of wood cast deep shadows in the overhead sun. To the left of the door and its open shutters we see another set of blue shutters which are closed. The exterior wall has been painted a light beige.

  • Horizontal photo of an artist’s mural painted on the side of a building in the town of Grand-Bourg on the island of Marie-Galante. The mural is a portrait of a black man who appears to look directly at the camera’s lens. He squints into the direct sun, lips drawn tightly, giving the appearance of a mild grimace. White hair, white eyebrows, and white beard stubble frame his long face underneath a reddish-brown straw hat which is folded up above his forehead. His leading right shoulder dips forward slightly.   • Horizontal photo of an artist’s mural painted on the side of a building in the town of Grand-Bourg on the island of Marie-Galante. The mural is a stylized portrait of a man’s long, slender, triangular face. His forehead just above the eyebrows, and bottom of his chin, extend off the top and bottom of the image, forming a tight composition. The artist has rendered the face in shades of light blue with dark shadows of deep black over a light gray concrete background. Patches of concrete show through underneath painted elements of the face’s mottled montage. The subject’s full, closed lips—painted in black on the top lip; and blue on the bottom—center a narrow black jaw and chin that tapers off the bottom edge. Large round light green, mustard yellow, and white eyes, with jet black pupils, stare penetratingly forward over a long thin nose.   • A Rastafarian man, on the island of St. Martin in the Caribbean, smiles gently at the camera.     A Rastafarian on the island of Saint Martin.  His dark skin and white shirt in full sun presented some exposure and white balance challenges—which required a lot of work in Capture One post-production.

  • A vertical portrait of a mother and daughter on the island of St. Martin in the Caribbean. Mother and daughter fill most of the frame, except for a huge white cloud that extends from the mother’s shoulders to the top of the image—apart from blue sky in the upper left and right corners of the photo. The mother, in her twenties, wears a gold sleeveless tank top and a gold necklace with a heart-shaped pendant, which contrasts brightly against her dark skin. She smiles broadly as she faces the camera. Her hands braid her daughter’s hair, who sits in front of and below her. The daughter, who also looks directly at the camera, scrunches up her eyes, nose, and mouth—reacting to mom who is pulling her hair into tight braids.

  • Horizontal landscape photo taken from the cockpit of a 43-foot sloop sailing off the coast of Dominica in the West Indies. We look over the yacht’s port side, at a 45-degree angle, across the 2-foot teak deck, underneath two chrome stanchions which form an inverted V-shape, past the winch to the blue ocean and verdant green coastline of Dominica. Blue sky dotted by white cumulous clouds appears in the upper third of the image. In the shadows of the hard dodger, a woman gazes out over this tropical scene as the sailboat slices through the Caribbean sea under full sail.

  • This portrait landscape photo is taken from the ridge of a steep mountainside on the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean. A stone wall on the left side of the image, which is perpendicular to the camera, follows a two-track road, just below it, off into the distance. Bright green grass in the middle and on both sides of the two-track, provides a series of stripes in the foreground. The mountainside disappears down to the right through palm trees and jungle foliage. About half a mile away another mountain peaks in front of a bright blue sky. In addition to the blue sky and gray stone wall, there are 100 different shades of green throughout the photo, ranging from grass green to dark teal on the distant mountain, which is partially darkened by an overhead cloud.

    Saint Lucia Mountain Road

    A mountain road on the island of Saint Lucia, part of the Lesser Antilles.  Nothing exceptional about the location—there are millions of similar views throughout the Caribbean.  I just really liked all of the different verdant shades of green; and the composition, with the stone wall and two-track road leading off to the mountain.

  • Deep blue sky frames the upper half of this vertical photo of The Baths in the British Virgin Islands. White cumulus clouds form a puffy strip across the middle of the photo, just above the horizon line. Sailboats at anchor from another stripe of white just below the clouds. Beige sand, damp from a receding wave, fills the foreground. Huge boulder stacks, on the left and right side of the photo, reach half-way up into the image, and 100-feet out into the water. Crystal clear rippled wavelets cover the beige sand in the middle of the photo, stretching out into turquoise waters of Devil’s Bay.

  • Vertical zoomed photo of Trafalgar falls on the island of Dominica in the West Indies. The waterfall, centered in the image, plunges from a dark gray granite crevice at the top to the pool 125-feet below, which is obscured by thick layer of mist. A half-second exposure slightly blurs the cascading water. Green foliage clings to the vertical rockface on either side of the waterfall.

  • This portrait landscape photo is taken from the side of a mountain at about 2,500 feet of elevation on the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean. It looks out to the two pitons (ancient volcanic plugs) in the upper center of the photograph, perhaps a mile or more away. At the bottom of the image, we see multicolored rooftops of the town of Soufriere in the valley. On the right side of the photo, Soufriere Bay blends seamlessly into the Caribbean Sea and a blue sky overhead. Green branches from nearby trees, dip into the sky from the top left and top right side of the photo, framing the two pitons, the village, and the Caribbean between them.

    Two Pitons

    A World Heritage Site, the two Pitons are mountainous volcanic plugs on the island of Saint Lucia.  As we wound our way down the road I asked our driver to stop when I spotted this composition, with the town of Soufriere in the foreground framed by the Caribbean Sea in the background.
