  • Horizontal photo of a white door with full-length blue shutters on either side in coastal town of Grand-Bourg on Marie-Galante Island in the Caribbean. Two full length panes of rippled glass divide the white door, which appears in the right side of the image. The long shutters on either side of the door are built with narrow planks of wood, framed with two Z-shaped supports that zig zag across the inside of the shutters. The Z-shaped pieces of wood cast deep shadows in the overhead sun. To the left of the door and its open shutters we see another set of blue shutters which are closed. The exterior wall has been painted a light beige.

The mural is a portrait of a black man who appears to look directly at the camera’s lens. He squints into the direct sun, lips drawn tightly, giving the appearance of a mild grimace. White hair, white eyebrows, and white beard stubble frame his long face underneath a reddish-brown straw hat which is folded up above his forehead. His leading right shoulder dips forward slightly. An open shirt, with large light blue and white vertical stripes, opens to his black-skinned chest. Multiple colors of green: pastel teal, lime, mint, olive, and pine, surround his head and shoulders. A metal door comprises most of the building wall. Hinges, strips of metal brackets, and rivets define the mural’s background texture.   • Horizontal photo of an artist’s mural painted on the side of a building in the town of Grand-Bourg on the island of Marie-Galante. The mural is a stylized portrait of a man’s long, slender, triangular face. His forehead just above the eyebrows, and bottom of his chin, extend off the top and bottom of the image, forming a tight composition. The artist has rendered the face in shades of light blue with dark shadows of deep black over a light gray concrete background. Patches of concrete show through underneath painted elements of the face’s mottled montage. The subject’s full, closed lips—painted in black on the top lip; and blue on the bottom—center a narrow black jaw and chin that tapers off the bottom edge. Large round light green, mustard yellow, and white eyes, with jet black pupils, stare penetratingly forward over a long thin nose. Green, blue, yellow swirls and splashes of graffiti-styled paint and gray concrete surround the face, which is outlined in a thin white line, making it appear to hover over the background.
