Baby blue lights illuminate the Colony’s façade, and blue neon outlines the letters on the hotel’s inverted-T sign, with the word ‘Colony’ reaching vertically from the second story to the roof.   • Bright blue sky frames the upper 2/3s of this landscape image. In the lower 1/3 of the image we see blue-green water from the Gulf of Mexico to the left; and a sandy beach to the right. Wave action has dampened the sand at the bottom of the image and to the right further up the beach. 60 feet away 20 Hobie 16 catamaran sailboats are lined up down the beach ready to launch for a race. Every sailboat has the same bright orange mainsail with a white palm tree and darker orange sunset on top of a 3-foot white strip along the bottom of the sail.     Plaza de la Danza

    People gather in the Plaza de la Danza (literally, "dance square") at dusk, adjacent to the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude in Oaxaca, Mexico. Families still gather socially in plazas and squares throughout Mexico. This plaza was very close to our hotel, so we walked past it almost every evening. I thought it was a quintessential Mexican scene: a plaza with families and friends adjacent to the church and lights twinkling on the distant mountain as twilight fades to night. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

  • Off the forward bow of our observation boat, a Hobie 16 catamaran under full sail passes us through the water off our bow. The forward sailor trims the orange and white mainsail and jib into a tight reach as the salt water from the Gulf of Mexico foams up and sprays behind the cat. The aft sailor grips the black tiller rod, focusing intently on the horizon. The Gulf of Mexico comprises the lower two-thirds of the frame—a deep blue backdrop to the Hobie 16 as it passes us in a “swoosh.”

    Rain Squall, Valles Caldera National Preserve

The volcanic eruption that occurred 1.25-million years ago left behind a 14-mile wide volcanic caldera.   • Horizontal photo of an albrijes carving—brightly colored Mexican folk-art sculptures—of a fantastical mythical red bull. We see his torso and head from the right side. Extremely fine detailed albrije patterns completely cover the bull's skin. Colorful patterned strips outline the mouth, nose, eye, and horns. Circular patterns radiate from the chest, side, and hump on the back. These intricate patterns include minute chevrons, diagonal lines, dots, smaller circles, dashes, and stripes in colors of red and orange with accents in yellow and blue. His pink nostril centers over a long, bright pink tongue, which sticks out from his open mouth. Brown horns, accented with similar patterns in dark browns and gold, curve forward and up over the bull's forehead.

    Red bull alebrijes carving in the Isaias Jimenez’s studio located in the small town of Arrazola, about 4-miles southwest of Oaxaca.  Isaias continues the Oaxacan alebrijes style created by his father Manuel Jiménez Ramírez (who has his own Wikipedia page). Alebrijes are a style of brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of imaginary and mythical creatures. This shot was taken about 1/4 mile north of the bridge. In reviewing the video afterwards, I realized the drone grazed the cliff wall—as evidenced by shaking video. Lucked out again.

  • Horizontal landscape of the backcountry road to Hana on the island of Maui, Hawaii. We look down an empty, deep lavender gray, two-lane country road which extends across the bottom left side of the image. The road curves to the right around a bend several hundred feet away in the center. Dark blue mountains, tinted purple, cut across the horizon—their ridgelines reach up into heavy gray overcast clouds. The mountains dip down slightly where the road turns around the bend, forming a wide V-shaped skyline. Tall pale mint-colored grass meadows line both sides of the road. On the right side of the photo, a steep hill, covered in multiple shades of pastel green grass, climbs up from the road into the cloudy sky. Several deciduous trees have grown through the thick grass carpet. The scene is one of quiet solitude awash in soft grey, green, and purplish-blue hues.

  • A brightly lit vertical photo, taken from the bottom of a stairway with 12 steps, looks up to the top of the stairs. At the top we see bright light coming in from an invisible window off to the left of the landing. Bright yellow light illuminates the landing at the top of the stairs, which refracts down onto orange-colored walls and orange carpeted stairs below. On the wall at the top of the stairs we see abstract artwork of sailboat sails within a vertical white frame around it. Inside the white frame is a lavender rectangular border. Inside the lavender border is a black rectangular border. Inside the black border is a yellow rectangular border. Inside the yellow rectangular border, we see a gradient background—from solid yellow at the top to a solid red ocean with whitecaps at the bottom. The yellow-red background provides a backdrop to the orange sails bending in the wind.     Stairway to Heaven

    This was actually the stairway to the locker rooms at the Acapulco Yacht Club.  But 'Stairway to Heaven' sounds a bit more evocative.  Every morning, light flooded the top of the stairs, amplifying the orange walls and carpet.  Love those Mexican colors.  Image made while cruising Mexico in our sailboat 2000.

    A stone walkway with arched teal door at the church of Saint John the Baptist in the village of San Juan Bautista Suchix Hahuca. Construction for this Renaissance architecture church was completed in 1576. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

  • Landscape photo of a home on Useppa Island, Florida. The image was taken from the right and front of the house, at about a 30-degree angle and 40-feet distant. The white house—in the Key West architectural style—has an elevated porch which wraps around on all four sides. A small, windowed dormer can be seen in the center of a silver metal roof. The front stairs descend from the porch to a manicured pea-gravel walkway that extends toward the bottom of the image. Lush tropical palms and foliage in multiple shades of green frame all sides of the house, with blue sky and small wisps of white clouds overhead.

    Useppa Island Home

    Private home on Useppa Island—a little-known island located on the northern boundary of Pine Island Sound in Southwest Florida.  Rising seas, around 4500 BC, disconnected Useppa from the mainland.  Among other historical facts, the CIA used Useppa as its clandestine practice site for the failed Bay of Pigs invasion.

A thick green canopy of deciduous trees extends to the top of the image which covers the walkway and reaches over the right 2/3s of the image. To the right of the walkway, underneath the shade of branches, a 30-foot strip of green foliage covers the ground in multiple shades of green. To the right of the foliage, we see a 50-foot strip of pure white sand illuminated by a bright sun, and then a deep blue water of Pine Island Sound which extends to the horizon. Blue sky can be seen through the trees across the upper 2/3s of the image. The walkway and beach are deserted.
