We look down an empty, deep lavender gray, two-lane country road which extends across the bottom left side of the image. The road curves to the right around a bend several hundred feet away in the center. Dark blue mountains, tinted purple, cut across the horizon—their ridgelines reach up into heavy gray overcast clouds. The mountains dip down slightly where the road turns around the bend, forming a wide V-shaped skyline. Tall pale mint-colored grass meadows line both sides of the road. On the right side of the photo, a steep hill, covered in multiple shades of pastel green grass, climbs up from the road into the cloudy sky. Several deciduous trees have grown through the thick grass carpet. The scene is one of quiet solitude awash in soft grey, green, and purplish-blue hues.

    Road to Hana

    During one of our many trips to Maui we rented a car and drove the back road to Hana, along Maui's north shore—including its 617 turns, 59 bridges, and over 52-miles of mostly dirt road.  This pastoral scene from the Hana Highway depicts Maui's serene landscapes.   • Horizontal photo of an abandoned 1950s truck on the island of Maui, Hawaii taken from the left front side of the vehicle, about 10-feet distant. The truck’s surface is covered with rust. Some would-be graffiti artist has spray painted various random designs on the front grill, hood, and cab—stars, circles, swirls, and stripes—with yellow, blue, green, and red paint. Both headlights are long gone. An old tire still clings to the rusted front wheel. Rocks have been thrown through the front window, which angles back slightly from a vertical center divider, leaving shards of broken glass around the edges. The driver’s door is ajar.

  • Vertical photo of a steering wheel taken inside the cab of a 1940s vintage pickup truck that has been abandoned on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Protruding from the metal dashboard and supported by a small 2-inch diameter cylindrical post, the large white round wheel shows severe, deep cracks and flaking from age. In the upper right corner of the image the original thick glass windshield has broken in half vertically. Large rust spots pockmark the once white metal dashboard. Vines growing in from the open window entwine the interior of the cab, weaving through and around the steering wheel. Several of the vines are supple, fresh, and green; others dried and brown.

  • Vertical photo of a 1940s vintage pickup truck that has been abandoned on the island of Maui, Hawaii. The photo was taken from the left side of the truck, just behind the driver’s door. The front of the truck points to the image’s left. This is a tight shot of the driver’s door, cab, and left front fender. The truck’s hood has been removed. The driver’s side door has been spray painted a deep azure blue—which makes the truck stand out against the rusty brown cab roof. A shiny chrome door handle contrasts brightly against the blue door. Paint on the truck’s left front fender, the same deep azure blue, flakes away in large sheets, exposing the original light blue color underneath. A white flaking steering wheel can be seen through the driver’s window in the interior of the truck.

The right front tire has been removed underneath the fender. A rusted wheel sits directly on the ground. The truck’s patchy blue paint—light sky blue to a deep azure—makes the truck pop against the dark brown and green hillside in the background. Dark brown rust spots punctuate and accent the blue exterior.
