  • Looking southwest and down the street from the center of brick-paved First Street in downtown Fort Myers, both curbs diminish toward the vanishing point almost 1-mile distant. Streetlamps in front of 30-foot palm trees line the avenue and illuminate Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza and Cabos Cantina in the foreground. The street is completely empty as the black sky overhead slowly fades to dawn. At the end of the street, and in the center of the photograph, High Point Place, a 33-story high-rise condominium, faintly catches early rays of the rising sun.

    Inn at Loretto Adobe Geometry

    The Inn and Spa at Loretto is located on the Old Santa Fe Trail, just southeast of downtown Santa Fe. The hotel's abstract geometric adobe block architecture, punctuated with brown metal gutters that look like wooden support beams jutting out from the walls; and the shadows from the morning sun, caught my attention.

  • Taken from a drone at night hovering at 30-feet over Ocean Boulevard in South Beach, Miami, the Colony Hotel and Boulevard Hotel fill most of this landscape image. Baby blue lights illuminate the Colony’s façade, and blue neon outlines the letters on the hotel’s inverted-T sign, with the word ‘Colony’ reaching vertically from the second story to the roof. White Italian miniature lights decorate the trunks of 40-foot palm trees for Christmas in front of the restaurant. The palm treetops frame the top of the image. The second story façade is brightly lit in a bright greens and blues. Patrons sit outside underneath a dark green awning that runs the length of the restaurant.   • A brightly lit vertical photo, taken from the bottom of a stairway with 12 steps, looks up to the top of the stairs. At the top we see bright light coming in from an invisible window off to the left of the landing. Bright yellow light illuminates the landing at the top of the stairs, which refracts down onto orange-colored walls and orange carpeted stairs below. On the wall at the top of the stairs we see abstract artwork of sailboat sails within a vertical white frame around it. Inside the white frame is a lavender rectangular border. Inside the lavender border is a black rectangular border. Inside the black border is a yellow rectangular border. Inside the yellow rectangular border, we see a gradient background—from solid yellow at the top to a solid red ocean with whitecaps at the bottom. The yellow-red background provides a backdrop to the orange sails bending in the wind. A brown varnished wooden banister, reflecting deep orange tones from the adjacent walls, reaches from the lower left bottom of the image to the top left, just in front of the landing.

    Stairway to Heaven

    This was actually the stairway to the locker rooms at the Acapulco Yacht Club.  But 'Stairway to Heaven' sounds a bit more evocative.  Every morning, light flooded the top of the stairs, amplifying the orange walls and carpet.  Love those Mexican colors.  Image made while cruising Mexico in our sailboat 2000.

  • Landscape photo of a home on Useppa Island, Florida. The image was taken from the right and front of the house, at about a 30-degree angle and 40-feet distant. The white house—in the Key West architectural style—has an elevated porch which wraps around on all four sides. A small, windowed dormer can be seen in the center of a silver metal roof. The front stairs descend from the porch to a manicured pea-gravel walkway that extends toward the bottom of the image. Lush tropical palms and foliage in multiple shades of green frame all sides of the house, with blue sky and small wisps of white clouds overhead.

    Useppa Island Home

    Private home on Useppa Island—a little-known island located on the northern boundary of Pine Island Sound in Southwest Florida.  Rising seas, around 4500 BC, disconnected Useppa from the mainland.  Among other historical facts, the CIA used Useppa as its clandestine practice site for the failed Bay of Pigs invasion.

  • A landscape (layout) photo of a wall of an abandoned building in Panama City, Panama. Three boarded up doorways on the second story each have their own wrought iron balcony. Underneath the three upper doors are three more doors on the ground floor. Teal colored stonework frames each of these doors on both sides and a keystone arch overhead. The ground level doors have wrought iron fences barring access. Paint on the beige-colored stucco wall cracks, flakes, and peals with age. The setting sun casts golden light on the upper 2/3s of the image, while the lower 1/3 is in a softer golden shadow.

    Wrought Iron Twilight

    Walking Panama City (Panama) one evening as the sun set, I came across this abandoned building just at golden hour, as the sun slipped below the horizon.  The combination of wrought iron railings and teal-colored tile arches formed an unusual color palette on the facade, with the decaying building behind it.  Shot while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.
