  • Vertical photograph of a young Kuna woman in the Guna Yala region of Panama. The image focuses on her legs—spanning the bottom of her black and yellow patterned skirt, hemmed just above her knees, down to her feet. Her legs are tightly wrapped with yellow and terra cotta colored beads that form a geometric pattern on the calves of both legs.     The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  The only way to truly experience the islands is by sailboat, and we sailed them for a month. Women wear mola blouses with patterned skirts, red and yellow head scarfs, and arm and leg beads.  This intricate geometric beaded pattern needed to be hand strung, bead-by-bead, to display correctly on her small legs.  Image made while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

    Chichicastenango Maize

    Like all third-world countries, vendors find any available space to sell their wares.  This woman spread her corn on a Chichicastenango street.  While not as colorful as most of my other images, the white corn spread out on the street, and her sweet smile, compelled me to take the shot.  Transparency taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • Horizontal photo of shirtless man dressed for the carnival celebration of lent in the village of Tilcajete, Mexico. His back is covered in black paint which has caked and dissolved in sweat from his activity in the hot sun. He has tied ten or more black cowbells around his waist, visible across the center third of the image. The cowbells bounce and carom into the air as he dances and chants. Underneath the cowbells we see a heavy burlap garment, stained from his black body paint, and fraying around the edges.

    Prior to Ash Wednesday the village of Tilcajete, near Oaxaca, celebrates carnival with imaginative animal and creature masks in chanting, grunting, colorful processions. Here, a carnival celebrant parades through the dusty village streets with his group of similarly-costumed friends. The cowbells strapped around his waist clang and and jangle as he grunts and dances. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

Electric wall sconces illuminate the 2nd story of the building visible on the right side of the image, shining columns of light up towards the roof which highlights and accents the horizontal cornice along the roofline.   • Looking southwest and down the street from the center of brick-paved First Street in downtown Fort Myers, both curbs diminish toward the vanishing point almost 1-mile distant. Streetlamps in front of 30-foot palm trees line the avenue and illuminate Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza and Cabos Cantina in the foreground. The street is completely empty as the black sky overhead slowly fades to dawn. At the end of the street, and in the center of the photograph, High Point Place, a 33-story high-rise condominium, faintly catches early rays of the rising sun.

  • Horizontal photo of an artist’s mural painted on the side of a building in the town of Grand-Bourg on the island of Marie-Galante. The mural is a stylized portrait of a man’s long, slender, triangular face. His forehead just above the eyebrows, and bottom of his chin, extend off the top and bottom of the image, forming a tight composition. The artist has rendered the face in shades of light blue with dark shadows of deep black over a light gray concrete background. Patches of concrete show through underneath painted elements of the face’s mottled montage. The subject’s full, closed lips—painted in black on the top lip; and blue on the bottom—center a narrow black jaw and chin that tapers off the bottom edge. Large round light green, mustard yellow, and white eyes, with jet black pupils, stare penetratingly forward over a long thin nose.   • A horizontal drone photo on Ocean Drive in Miami’s South Beach at night. Taken from 30-feet in the air from the park across the street, the composition looks straight to the center of the Avalon Hotel. Bands of bright green neon lights stretch across each of the three-story balconies, in between a checkerboard of backlit and unlit windows. The hotel’s signature “Avalon” horizontal sign, in large art-deco font, illuminates the front of the building’s second story. Square yellow umbrellas line Ocean Drive where guests dine alfresco. A lone, white and yellow 57’ Chevy convertible, with 4-inch whitewall tires and lots of ‘attitude,’ sits proudly, parked on the street. The polished hood and trunk of the Chevy glistens underneath the green lights of the hotel’s façade.

  • Taken from a drone at night hovering at 30-feet over Ocean Boulevard in South Beach, Miami, the Colony Hotel and Boulevard Hotel fill most of this landscape image. Baby blue lights illuminate the Colony’s façade, and blue neon outlines the letters on the hotel’s inverted-T sign, with the word ‘Colony’ reaching vertically from the second story to the roof. Boulevard Hotel’s red neon vertical outline and red neon sign contrasts dramatically with the Colony’s softer blue theme. Black sky and the dark street frame both hotels in the image.

    People gather in the Plaza de la Danza (literally, "dance square") at dusk, adjacent to the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude in Oaxaca, Mexico. Families still gather socially in plazas and squares throughout Mexico. This plaza was very close to our hotel, so we walked past it almost every evening. I thought it was a quintessential Mexican scene: a plaza with families and friends adjacent to the church and lights twinkling on the distant mountain as twilight fades to night.
