    Raices Fountain (2/2)

    Raices Fountain, located in the historic colonial section of San Juan, is said to be one of the most romantic spots in Old San Juan.  I wouldn't know—Bekki was off with someone else when I took these shots.  Image #2 of a diptych.  San Juan was part of our Caribbean cruise in 2008.

  • A vertical portrait of a mother and daughter on the island of St. Martin in the Caribbean. Mother and daughter fill most of the frame, except for a huge white cloud that extends from the mother’s shoulders to the top of the image—apart from blue sky in the upper left and right corners of the photo. The mother, in her twenties, wears a gold sleeveless tank top and a gold necklace with a heart-shaped pendant, which contrasts brightly against her dark skin. She smiles broadly as she faces the camera. Her hands braid her daughter’s hair, who sits in front of and below her. The daughter, who also looks directly at the camera, scrunches up her eyes, nose, and mouth—reacting to mom who is pulling her hair into tight braids.

    Reluctant Braids

  • This landscape photo, taken in the Guna Yala region of Panama, looks down into a dugout canoe at two Kuna children. The canoe slices the rectangular image at almost a 45-degree angle, from upper right to lower left. Sitting in the canoe, a sister and brother look up at the camera, curious but unsmiling. The eight-year-old sister steadies herself with her right hand on the starboard gunwale, her left arm around her younger brother, who is perhaps six years old.     San Blas Siblings

    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  Brother and sister looked up and smiled from their dugout canoe as their father delivered fruits on the stern of our sailboat.  Image made while we were cruising the San Blas in our sailboat 2001.

  • Deep blue sky frames the upper half of this horizontal landscape photo of The Baths in the British Virgin Islands. White cumulus clouds arc from the upper left, down across the horizon, and up again to the right. Beige sand fills the lower third of the image, while large boulders cascade from the left into the center. Crystal clear waters lap against the boulders and ripple out into the turquoise waters of Devil’s Bay. Families swim in the shallow waters on the right side of the photo. Ten or more sailboats drift at anchor on the horizon, several hundred feet in the distance.
