  • Looking southwest and down the street from the center of brick-paved First Street in downtown Fort Myers, both curbs diminish toward the vanishing point almost 1-mile distant. Streetlamps in front of 30-foot palm trees line the avenue and illuminate Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza and Cabos Cantina in the foreground. The street is completely empty as the black sky overhead slowly fades to dawn. At the end of the street, and in the center of the photograph, High Point Place, a 33-story high-rise condominium, faintly catches early rays of the rising sun.

Taken from 30-feet in the air from the park across the street, the composition looks straight to the center of the Avalon Hotel. Bands of bright green neon lights stretch across each of the three-story balconies, in between a checkerboard of backlit and unlit windows. The hotel’s signature “Avalon” horizontal sign, in large art-deco font, illuminates the front of the building’s second story. Square yellow umbrellas line Ocean Drive where guests dine alfresco. A lone, white and yellow 57’ Chevy convertible, with 4-inch whitewall tires and lots of ‘attitude,’ sits proudly, parked on the street. The polished hood and trunk of the Chevy glistens underneath the green lights of the hotel’s façade.

  • Taken from a drone at night hovering at 30-feet over Ocean Boulevard in South Beach, Miami, the Colony Hotel and Boulevard Hotel fill most of this landscape image. Baby blue lights illuminate the Colony’s façade, and blue neon outlines the letters on the hotel’s inverted-T sign, with the word ‘Colony’ reaching vertically from the second story to the roof. Boulevard Hotel’s red neon vertical outline and red neon sign contrasts dramatically with the Colony’s softer blue theme. Black sky and the dark street frame both hotels in the image.

A dark, deep purplish-blue light cloaks the three-story Crescent Hotel on the left—accentuated with blue neon art deco accent lights: Seven blue neon circles in a row hover just below the flat roofline. A man with a white shirt and white panama had stands at the entrance to the restaurant looking inside.

White Italian miniature lights decorate the trunks of 40-foot palm trees for Christmas in front of the restaurant. The palm treetops frame the top of the image. The second story façade is brightly lit in a bright greens and blues. Patrons sit outside underneath a dark green awning that runs the length of the restaurant.   • A drone, hovering 100-feet or more at night, looks west over the Breakwater Hotel’s blue vertical backlit sign and roof, at the bottom of the image, to Miami’s skyline over 3-miles away. Buildings and rooftops lit from the outside—many with illuminated windows—compose the lower 2/3s of this landscape image.     The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, located about 12-miles northwest of Taos, is purported to be the fifth highest bridge in the U.S., spanning the gorge 650-feet above the Rio Grande. This shot was taken about 1/4 mile north of the bridge. In reviewing the video afterwards, I realized the drone grazed the cliff wall—as evidenced by shaking video. Lucked out again.

  • Horizontal photo of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge that spans the entrance to Tampa Bay between St. Petersburg to the north (left), and Terra Ceia to the south (right). The bridge’s distinctive cable-stayed supports rise like two gigantic sails 250-feet high over the 180-foot bridge height on the right two-thirds of the image. (Total height 430-feet.) The sky behind the bridge, in the upper two thirds of the image, ranges from a muted grayish mauve on the horizon to a dusty mustard yellow at the top of the frame. Waters in the foreground reflect the gray-mauve horizon. On the left side of the photo, the bridge diminishes in perspective to a small point on the horizon.

    Skyway Bridge

    The Sunshine Skyway Bridge spans the southern tip of St. Petersburg, Florida, with Terra Ceia on the south side of Tampa Bay.  Here, I captured the cabled support systems of the bridge's sails with a backdrop of yellow-cast clouds after the sun had set.

  • This landscape photo taken in Tikal, Guatemala, looks over the top of a jungle canopy in the lower 2/3s of the image, its colors ranging from bright lime to deep forest green. We look down on the archeological ruins of the Temple of Talud and Tablero in the lower left third of the image, and up to the Temple of the Double Headed Serpent in the upper right corner with its roof comb high above the treeline. A ridge of mountains can be seen on the horizon, several miles distant, with a blue cloudless sky above.

  • Tikal, Guatemala. A zoom shot taken from a nearby pyramid shows the roof comb of Temple IV (Temple of the Double Headed Serpent)—at a height of 212-feet. The roof comb, which appears in the left third of the image, floats over lush green trees below it. A cloudless blue sky provides a colorful background. We see several people standing inside the doorway of the dark gray roof comb.

  • Tikal, Guatemala. The Temple of the Giant Jaguar, fills the photo from the perspective of standing at ground level 200-feet distant, looking up 180-feet up the face of the steep pyramid to the high roof comb. Blue sky and white clouds provide a backdrop for the upper 2/3s of the temple, which is framed by green trees on both sides. Ten visitors walking along the base of the pyramid appear miniscule.

    Temple of the Great Jaguar
