• Off the forward bow of our observation boat, a Hobie 16 catamaran under full sail hikes up out of the water in front of us. Leaning heavily to port, its forward starboard pontoon flies 4-5 feet in the air out of the blue Gulf of Mexico. Only the forward part of the white port-side pontoon is visible—the aft is buried deep in the water as the Hobie jets past us at 15-20 knots. The cat’s black mast leans 45-degrees to port, jib and mainsail stretched tight in the wind. The sailor closest to me in blue hikes out over the starboard side of the pontoon. His companion in yellow leans further out to starboard, tethered with a safety harness that keeps him from flying off the boat.

    Hiking Out

    The 22nd Hobie 16 World race was held on Captiva Island, Florida, on November, 2019.  Sailors hike out to windward to counter the force of the wind on the sails during one of the races.  The starboard pontoon is about 5-6 feet out of the water.

  • This landscape layout photo shows a street scene in Huatulco, Mexico. At the bottom of the image, we see the street, just above which there is a 9-inch curb and sidewalk. The back of the sidewalk intersects with an orange stucco wall at about 1/3 of the image height. A leafless tree trunk extends from the middle of the sidewalk up out of the top of the frame, branching into three smaller trunks in the upper third of the photo. On either side of the tree trunk two men lie asleep on their backs. They lie parallel to each other at an angle to the sidewalk: heads to the left, toros stretching to the curb where their knees bend above the edge, with their feet planted on the street. Street, curb, sidewalk, and tree are all a similar shade of gray. Yellow leaves have blown into the corner of the street and curb. A bright shaft of light spills down just behind the tree, highlighting the orange stucco wall. It’s a peaceful afternoon siesta in Huatulco.

    Huatulco Siesta

    Walking around Huatulco, Mexico, one afternoon, I turned the corner to find two men taking a sidewalk siesta in the afternoon heat.  This was one of those photographer moments when panic struck: can I get the camera up, shutter speed set, lens focused, and get the shot off before they stirred?  Yes!  Was it all that time behind the lens that paid off?  Probably not.  They were really zonked out.  (Or maybe a little bit of both.)  This is one of my favorite images from Mexico.  Image made while cruising Mexico in our sailboat 2000.

The forward sailor trims the orange and white mainsail and jib into a tight reach as the salt water from the Gulf of Mexico foams up and sprays behind the cat. The aft sailor grips the black tiller rod, focusing intently on the horizon. The Gulf of Mexico comprises the lower two-thirds of the frame—a deep blue backdrop to the Hobie 16 as it passes us in a “swoosh.”

    Racing into the Wind

    The 22nd Hobie 16 World race was held on Captiva Island, Florida, on November, 2019.  A 16' Hobie Cat points into the wind during one of the races as the port side pontoon throws spray from the leeward side of the cat.

    Tobacco Shipment

    I shot several images of the Cuba Tobacco Cigar Company during a shooting trip to Little Havana in Miami. Here the store owners inspect a shipment of tobacco leaves in preparation for cutting and rolling. Little Havana is a neighborhood in Miami that is home to many Cuban exiles. The neighborhood is known for Cuban culture, food, and cigars.
