    Walking Old Town Albuquerque (a touristy attraction comprised mostly of trinket shops) I turned down a side alley to find this simple adobe wall with wooden support beams (technical term: vigas), casting long shadows at a 45-degree angle across the stucco canvas.

  • A tight vertical photo looking up from the base of the waterfall to the top of Amicalola Falls, at the Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia. The camera angle looks upward to the height of the falls about 150-feet away. A ¼-second exposure blurs the water as it cascades down from the upper left-half of the image to the right half in the middle, filling the full camera frame at the bottom. Green foliage and slick black rock surfaces frame the tumbling waterfall around the falling water.

    Amicalola Falls

    We drove to Amicalola Falls State Park while visiting friends who rented a cabin in Ellijay, Georgia.  This vantage point of the 729-foot waterfall requires walking down 600-stairs to the base.  Going down is not the problem.

  • Looking southwest and down the street from the center of brick-paved First Street in downtown Fort Myers, both curbs diminish toward the vanishing point almost 1-mile distant. Streetlamps in front of 30-foot palm trees line the avenue and illuminate Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza and Cabos Cantina in the foreground. The street is completely empty as the black sky overhead slowly fades to dawn. At the end of the street, and in the center of the photograph, High Point Place, a 33-story high-rise condominium, faintly catches early rays of the rising sun.

  • Vertical (portrait) image of the 110-foot La Paz Waterfall in Costa Rica’s Alajuela Province. The whitewater waterfall is framed in the center of the image surrounded by lush green tropical forest. An observation deck can be seen to the upper right from where the falls starts.   • Leaning Windward

    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  Only the larger islands are inhabited.  Coconuts are harvested on the smaller islands.  A lone coconut palm leans to windward over white sand and turquoise water.  Taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • Horizontal landscape scene on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Taken from the top of a hill, the photo provides a sweeping view of pineapple fields in the foreground and the island of Molokai on the distant horizon. Five distinct horizontal bands stripe across the image. Deep green pineapple fields, interlaced with terracotta colored access roads, comprise the lower third of the photo. Six tall palm trees form a tight cluster on the edge of the fields in the left third of the image half a mile away. Above the pineapple fields the blue Pacific Ocean, freckled by occasional tiny whitecaps, forms the straits between Maui and Molokai. In the upper third of the image, Molokai’s bluish-gray mountains—the world’s highest sea cliffs—rise from the ocean to reach an altitude of over 3,000 feet. Thick white cumulous clouds hover at the crest of the mountain ridgeline. Light blue sky forms the final band of color at the top of the photo.

    Maui Pineapple Fields Forever

    Pineapple cultivation used to be one of the largest industries on Maui.  However, many pineapple businesses closed in the 2000s.  Although there has been a resurgence in pineapple farming with hybrid grafting techniques, scenes like this one from 2000 have largely disappeared.

  • This landscape photo, from the Guna Yala region of Panama, shows dark powder blue water below the horizon, in the middle of the image; and a similarly dark powder blue sky—all through the filter of an imperceptibly light fog. In the middle of the photo, at the horizon line, a small round island is visible. The island is 150-200 feet away, and maybe another 100-feet in diameter. A cluster of dark green and dark teal palm trees rises from every inch of the island, 50-60 feet high. Intersecting the lower left third of the image we see a dugout canoe which is almost parallel to the lens. The stern is slightly more distant than the bow, which is tied to a stick jutting out of the water two canoe-lengths to the right. A fisherman sits in the canoe, his back to us, arms stretched out sideways, as he manages the fishing line.

  • Taken from a drone at night hovering at 30-feet over Ocean Boulevard in South Beach, Miami, the Colony Hotel and Boulevard Hotel fill most of this landscape image. Baby blue lights illuminate the Colony’s façade, and blue neon outlines the letters on the hotel’s inverted-T sign, with the word ‘Colony’ reaching vertically from the second story to the roof.   • A drone, hovering 100-feet or more at night, looks west over the Breakwater Hotel’s blue vertical backlit sign and roof, at the bottom of the image, to Miami’s skyline over 3-miles away.   • A horizontal drone photo on Ocean Drive in Miami’s South Beach at night. Taken from 30-feet in the air, the image looks directly at the Mc Alpin and Ocean Plaza Hotels from the park across the street. Bands of bright blue lights illuminate the facades of both buildings, in between layers of windows on each of the three levels.   • Overlooking the Plaza de la Danza with the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude on the right side of the image. A dark blue twilight sky frames the silhouetted trees in the back of the plaza and twinkling lights on the nearby mountain in the background.     Plaza de la Danza

    People gather in the Plaza de la Danza (literally, "dance square") at dusk, adjacent to the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude in Oaxaca, Mexico. Families still gather socially in plazas and squares throughout Mexico. This plaza was very close to our hotel, so we walked past it almost every evening. I thought it was a quintessential Mexican scene: a plaza with families and friends adjacent to the church and lights twinkling on the distant mountain as twilight fades to night. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

    Raices Fountain, located in the historic colonial section of San Juan, is said to be one of the most romantic spots in Old San Juan.  I wouldn't know—Bekki was off with someone else when I took these shots.  Image #1 of a diptych.  San Juan was part of our Caribbean cruise in 2008.

  • A horizontal landscape photo of a white stucco wall in Old Town, San Diego. The wall is brightly illuminated by the full-on overhead sun. A vertical window intersects the left third of the image. Framed with weathered wood painted olive-green, the narrow 3-foot wide window is centered underneath a six-foot long lintel, which is embedded into the stucco wall. The olive-colored lintel and window contrast dramatically against the white stucco wall. At the top edge of the image, shadows from the Spanish style tile roof (which is not visible) frame the upper edge of the photo in a narrow strip along the horizontal length of the white wall.
