    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  Only the larger islands are inhabited.  Coconuts are harvested on the smaller islands.  A lone coconut palm leans to windward over white sand and turquoise water.  Taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • This landscape photo, from the Guna Yala region of Panama, is taken from the perspective of standing on an island beach. In the lower 1/5 of the image we see a small flat wave receding from a dark mauve colored sand. The edge of the water ripples and foams as it pulls away from the beach. Above the receding wave, up to the horizon line in the middle of the photo, various shades of teal-colored water wrinkle from a soft breeze. In the middle of the photo, about 150-feet away, we see a ketch at anchor, its bow facing left into the wind. The setting sun, which is off camera to the right, illuminates the port side of the yacht in a soft golden light. Directly behind the sailboat, and perhaps another 100-feet distant, a small island with dark palm trees provides a backdrop to the bow, stern, and top of the glowing sailboat. A blue sky peeks through many clouds in the top half of the image.     San Blas Anchorage

    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  The only way to truly experience the islands is by sailboat, and we sailed them for a month. Walking the beach on one of these many islands, I looked up to see this ketch gently illuminated by the setting sun.  Shot while cruising the San Blas in our sailboat 2001.

    A stone walkway with arched teal door at the church of Saint John the Baptist in the village of San Juan Bautista Suchix Hahuca. Construction for this Renaissance architecture church was completed in 1576. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

  • This landscape photo, from the Boca del Toro region of Panama, shows a wooden pier jutting out from the right side of the image. The pier’s walkway is exactly on the horizon line. At the end of the pier, almost on the left side of the image, we see three separate thatched roofs held up by thin log supports. A soft golden light from the setting sun highlight the thin edge of the pier and thatched roofs facing the camera. The water, a muddy blue-teal pastel, is calm except for long ripples that turn the reflected roofs into dark brown, striated streaks on the surface.   • Deep blue sky frames the upper half of this vertical photo of The Baths in the British Virgin Islands. White cumulus clouds form a puffy strip across the middle of the photo, just above the horizon line. Sailboats at anchor from another stripe of white just below the clouds. Beige sand, damp from a receding wave, fills the foreground. Huge boulder stacks, on the left and right side of the photo, reach half-way up into the image, and 100-feet out into the water. Crystal clear rippled wavelets cover the beige sand in the middle of the photo, stretching out into turquoise waters of Devil’s Bay.

  • This vertical photograph, taken in the Guna Yala region of Panama shows, multiple bands of sand, water, and sky: from light beige of the sandy beach at the bottom, to a darker beige where water recedes back into the ocean, to a light teal of the waves as they first make contact with the sandy beach, to a dark teal 30-feet away, to a dark blue on the ocean’s horizon, to a sky blue with a few white puffy clouds above the horizon.     Gallery hopping along Santa Fe's Canyon Road, we ducked into a back courtyard for some cold, iced slushies. Against a side wall, a bench fused rusted iron into a patina of light green and deep teal.  I love the patchwork of sun and shadows playing on the stucco wall.

  • A landscape (layout) photo of a wall of an abandoned building in Panama City, Panama. Three boarded up doorways on the second story each have their own wrought iron balcony. Underneath the three upper doors are three more doors on the ground floor. Teal colored stonework frames each of these doors on both sides and a keystone arch overhead. The ground level doors have wrought iron fences barring access. Paint on the beige-colored stucco wall cracks, flakes, and peals with age. The setting sun casts golden light on the upper 2/3s of the image, while the lower 1/3 is in a softer golden shadow.

    Walking Panama City (Panama) one evening as the sun set, I came across this abandoned building just at golden hour, as the sun slipped below the horizon.  The combination of wrought iron railings and teal-colored tile arches formed an unusual color palette on the facade, with the decaying building behind it.  Shot while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.
