The front of the truck points to the image’s left. This is a tight shot of the driver’s door, cab, and left front fender. The truck’s hood has been removed. The driver’s side door has been spray painted a deep azure blue—which makes the truck stand out against the rusty brown cab roof. A shiny chrome door handle contrasts brightly against the blue door. Paint on the truck’s left front fender, the same deep azure blue, flakes away in large sheets, exposing the original light blue color underneath. A white flaking steering wheel can be seen through the driver’s window in the interior of the truck.

  • Vertical photo of a steering wheel taken inside the cab of a 1940s vintage pickup truck that has been abandoned on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Protruding from the metal dashboard and supported by a small 2-inch diameter cylindrical post, the large white round wheel shows severe, deep cracks and flaking from age. In the upper right corner of the image the original thick glass windshield has broken in half vertically. Large rust spots pockmark the once white metal dashboard. Vines growing in from the open window entwine the interior of the cab, weaving through and around the steering wheel. Several of the vines are supple, fresh, and green; others dried and brown.

Some would-be graffiti artist has spray painted various random designs on the front grill, hood, and cab—stars, circles, swirls, and stripes—with yellow, blue, green, and red paint. Both headlights are long gone, as are all the tires. Rocks have been thrown through the front window, which angles back slightly from a vertical center fold, leaving shards of broken glass around the edges.
