    Lavender Sunset

    A purple pastel sunset while at anchor in the San Blas Archipelago of Panama.  Off the northeastern coast, the archipelago is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  The only way to truly experience the island is by sailboat, and we sailed the islands for a month.  Image made while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

    Plaza de la Danza

    People gather in the Plaza de la Danza (literally, "dance square") at dusk, adjacent to the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude in Oaxaca, Mexico. Families still gather socially in plazas and squares throughout Mexico. This plaza was very close to our hotel, so we walked past it almost every evening. I thought it was a quintessential Mexican scene: a plaza with families and friends adjacent to the church and lights twinkling on the distant mountain as twilight fades to night. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

  • This landscape photo, from the Guna Yala region of Panama, is taken from the perspective of standing on an island beach. In the lower 1/5 of the image we see a small flat wave receding from a dark mauve colored sand. The edge of the water ripples and foams as it pulls away from the beach. Above the receding wave, up to the horizon line in the middle of the photo, various shades of teal-colored water wrinkle from a soft breeze. In the middle of the photo, about 150-feet away, we see a ketch at anchor, its bow facing left into the wind. The setting sun, which is off camera to the right, illuminates the port side of the yacht in a soft golden light. Directly behind the sailboat, and perhaps another 100-feet distant, a small island with dark palm trees provides a backdrop to the bow, stern, and top of the glowing sailboat. A blue sky peeks through many clouds in the top half of the image. Clouds on the right side of the photo are also illuminated by the setting sun, which accents the blue sky with shades of gold, yellow, gray, and lavender.

    San Blas Anchorage

  • Horizontal photo of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge that spans the entrance to Tampa Bay between St. Petersburg to the north (left), and Terra Ceia to the south (right). The bridge’s distinctive cable-stayed supports rise like two gigantic sails 250-feet high over the 180-foot bridge height on the right two-thirds of the image. (Total height 430-feet.) The sky behind the bridge, in the upper two thirds of the image, ranges from a muted grayish mauve on the horizon to a dusty mustard yellow at the top of the frame. Waters in the foreground reflect the gray-mauve horizon. On the left side of the photo, the bridge diminishes in perspective to a small point on the horizon.

    Skyway Bridge

    The Sunshine Skyway Bridge spans the southern tip of St. Petersburg, Florida, with Terra Ceia on the south side of Tampa Bay.  Here, I captured the cabled support systems of the bridge's sails with a backdrop of yellow-cast clouds after the sun had set.

  • A landscape (layout) photo of a wall of an abandoned building in Panama City, Panama. Three boarded up doorways on the second story each have their own wrought iron balcony. Underneath the three upper doors are three more doors on the ground floor. Teal colored stonework frames each of these doors on both sides and a keystone arch overhead. The ground level doors have wrought iron fences barring access. Paint on the beige-colored stucco wall cracks, flakes, and peals with age. The setting sun casts golden light on the upper 2/3s of the image, while the lower 1/3 is in a softer golden shadow.

    Wrought Iron Twilight

    Walking Panama City (Panama) one evening as the sun set, I came across this abandoned building just at golden hour, as the sun slipped below the horizon.  The combination of wrought iron railings and teal-colored tile arches formed an unusual color palette on the facade, with the decaying building behind it.  Shot while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.
