• This portrait landscape photo is taken from the side of a mountain at about 2,500 feet of elevation on the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean. It looks out to the two pitons (ancient volcanic plugs) in the upper center of the photograph, perhaps a mile or more away. At the bottom of the image, we see multicolored rooftops of the town of Soufriere in the valley. On the right side of the photo, Soufriere Bay blends seamlessly into the Caribbean Sea and a blue sky overhead. Green branches from nearby trees, dip into the sky from the top left and top right side of the photo, framing the two pitons, the village, and the Caribbean between them.

    A World Heritage Site, the two Pitons are mountainous volcanic plugs on the island of Saint Lucia.  As we wound our way down the road I asked our driver to stop when I spotted this composition, with the town of Soufriere in the foreground framed by the Caribbean Sea in the background.

  • A landscape photo shows a horizon of black silhouetted trees rising up from the horizon, about ¼ mile away. The photo is taken from a dark gray river, its waters seen at the bottom one fifth of the photo. On the left 1/3 of the image, just above the horizon, we see the San Miguel Volcano pushing into the sky, the top half of which is lit by the setting sun. Golden clouds cluster around the volcano’s peak. Behind the volcano we see a peach-colored sky, with gray clouds above, and light blue sky behind the gray clouds at the very top of the photo. The dark gray water of the river reflects peach and blue skylights.

    San Miguel volcano (also known as Volcan Chapparastique) is an active volcano about nine miles southwest of San Miguel, El Salvador.  Here, the setting sun begins to fade on the volcano's western face.  This image taken from the deck of Andante, our 42-foot sailboat, from the Lempa River while cruising Central America 2000-2001.
