    90 Miles to Cuba

  • A tight vertical photo looking up from the base of the waterfall to the top of Amicalola Falls, at the Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia. The camera angle looks upward to the height of the falls about 150-feet away. A ¼-second exposure blurs the water as it cascades down from the upper left-half of the image to the right half in the middle, filling the full camera frame at the bottom. Green foliage and slick black rock surfaces frame the tumbling waterfall around the falling water.

    Amicalola Falls

    We drove to Amicalola Falls State Park while visiting friends who rented a cabin in Ellijay, Georgia.  This vantage point of the 729-foot waterfall requires walking down 600-stairs to the base.  Going down is not the problem.

  • Vertical photo of a steering wheel taken inside the cab of a 1940s vintage pickup truck that has been abandoned on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Protruding from the metal dashboard and supported by a small 2-inch diameter cylindrical post, the large white round wheel shows severe, deep cracks and flaking from age. In the upper right corner of the image the original thick glass windshield has broken in half vertically. Large rust spots pockmark the once white metal dashboard. Vines growing in from the open window entwine the interior of the cab, weaving through and around the steering wheel. Several of the vines are supple, fresh, and green; others dried and brown.

    Blue Truck (3/3)

    During one of our many trips to Maui we rented a car and drove the back road to Hana, along Maui's north shore—including its 617 turns and 59 bridges over 52-miles of mostly dirt road.  Off of a side road I spotted a make-shift junk yard of abandoned trucks.  Need I say more?  Also see 'Graffiti Truck' for another series of images from this shoot.

  • Close-up landscape photo of a woman, perhaps in her fifties, selling white corn at a market in Chichicastenango, Guatemala. In the lower half of the photo she has laid out a sheet of black plastic onto the street, over which she has poured a mound of white corn kernels that form a pyramid in the lower third of the image. In the upper half of the photo we see a large empty burlap gunny sack, laying on the sidewalk, used to transport the corn. She sits adjacent to her corn, with both legs tucked underneath her knees. Her long black hair, which is pulled to the back of her neck, matches her black long-sleeve sweater. She wears a Guatemalan embroidered blouse with red, orange, yellow, and pink flowers, and a dark blue skirt. Her eyes sparkle as she smiles at the camera without parting her lips.

    Chichicastenango Maize

    Like all third-world countries, vendors find any available space to sell their wares.  This woman spread her corn on a Chichicastenango street.  While not as colorful as most of my other images, the white corn spread out on the street, and her sweet smile, compelled me to take the shot.  Transparency taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • Horizontal photo of a white door with full-length blue shutters on either side in coastal town of Grand-Bourg on Marie-Galante Island in the Caribbean. Two full length panes of rippled glass divide the white door, which appears in the right side of the image. The long shutters on either side of the door are built with narrow planks of wood, framed with two Z-shaped supports that zig zag across the inside of the shutters. The Z-shaped pieces of wood cast deep shadows in the overhead sun. To the left of the door and its open shutters we see another set of blue shutters which are closed. The exterior wall has been painted a light beige.

    Grand-Bourg Blue Shutters

    Pastel blue shutters frame a white door with textured glass in the town of Grand-Bourg, on the island of Marie-Galante.  I often walk into these small towns with busy traffic and and run-down infrastructure thinking, "what am I going to shoot here?"  Finding shots like this is like a treasure hunt.  Image made while sailing with friends in the West Indies.

  • Vertical (portrait) image of the 110-foot La Paz Waterfall in Costa Rica’s Alajuela Province. The whitewater waterfall is framed in the center of the image surrounded by lush green tropical forest. An observation deck can be seen to the upper right from where the falls starts. A timed exposure blurs the water falling into a dark blue-green pool at the bottom which is covered by foam and mist from the impact of the falling water.

  • Horizontal landscape scene on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Taken from the top of a hill, the photo provides a sweeping view of pineapple fields in the foreground and the island of Molokai on the distant horizon. Five distinct horizontal bands stripe across the image. Deep green pineapple fields, interlaced with terracotta colored access roads, comprise the lower third of the photo. Six tall palm trees form a tight cluster on the edge of the fields in the left third of the image half a mile away. Above the pineapple fields the blue Pacific Ocean, freckled by occasional tiny whitecaps, forms the straits between Maui and Molokai. In the upper third of the image, Molokai’s bluish-gray mountains—the world’s highest sea cliffs—rise from the ocean to reach an altitude of over 3,000 feet. Thick white cumulous clouds hover at the crest of the mountain ridgeline. Light blue sky forms the final band of color at the top of the photo.

    Maui Pineapple Fields Forever

    Pineapple cultivation used to be one of the largest industries on Maui.  However, many pineapple businesses closed in the 2000s.  Although there has been a resurgence in pineapple farming with hybrid grafting techniques, scenes like this one from 2000 have largely disappeared.

  • North America, United States, New Mexico, Valles Caldera National Preserve. 13-mile-wide depression of meadows and streams resulting from a volcanic eruption 1.25-million years ago.

    Rain Squall, Valles Caldera National Preserve

    Valles Caldera National Preserve is located in the Jemez Mountain range of northern New Mexico. The volcanic eruption that occurred 1.25-million years ago left behind a 14-mile wide volcanic caldera. As we explored the preserve in our rented Highlander that afternoon, squalls streamed across the basin, illuminated by late afternoon sun.

  • A Rastafarian man, on the island of St. Martin in the Caribbean, smiles gently at the camera. His shoulders and face are directly lit by the sun, which is high and to the left, leaving the right side of his face in shadow. A white moustache and beard, knotted four inches below his chin, contrasts dramatically against his black face. He wears a multicolored knitted cap: pink above his forehead, yellow in the middle, and spring green at the top. The hat bends backwards away from the camera due to the weight of hair inside. He wears a plain white shirt. Above his shoulders, swirls of dark green foliage and bright blue sky blur around him in the background.

    A Rastafarian on the island of Saint Martin.  His dark skin and white shirt in full sun presented some exposure and white balance challenges—which required a lot of work in Capture One post-production.

  • A vertical portrait of a mother and daughter on the island of St. Martin in the Caribbean. Mother and daughter fill most of the frame, except for a huge white cloud that extends from the mother’s shoulders to the top of the image—apart from blue sky in the upper left and right corners of the photo. The mother, in her twenties, wears a gold sleeveless tank top and a gold necklace with a heart-shaped pendant, which contrasts brightly against her dark skin. She smiles broadly as she faces the camera. Her hands braid her daughter’s hair, who sits in front of and below her. The daughter, who also looks directly at the camera, scrunches up her eyes, nose, and mouth—reacting to mom who is pulling her hair into tight braids.

  • This landscape portrait of a chef in San Salvador, El Salvador, shows him in a double-breasted, white chef’s uniform. He is a young, handsome El Salvadoran man in his late twenties. He faces the camera directly. In the bottom of the frame, we see his torso just above his elbows. His right shoulder is positioned just below center in the image. He leans to his left, such that his face is in the right 1/3 of the frame. He wears a 2-foot-high white chef’s hat that leans upward and to the right at a 25-degree angle.     San Salvador Chef

  • Vertical zoomed photo of Trafalgar falls on the island of Dominica in the West Indies. The waterfall, centered in the image, plunges from a dark gray granite crevice at the top to the pool 125-feet below, which is obscured by thick layer of mist. A half-second exposure slightly blurs the cascading water. Green foliage clings to the vertical rockface on either side of the waterfall.

  • Landscape photo of a home on Useppa Island, Florida. The image was taken from the right and front of the house, at about a 30-degree angle and 40-feet distant. The white house—in the Key West architectural style—has an elevated porch which wraps around on all four sides. A small, windowed dormer can be seen in the center of a silver metal roof. The front stairs descend from the porch to a manicured pea-gravel walkway that extends toward the bottom of the image. Lush tropical palms and foliage in multiple shades of green frame all sides of the house, with blue sky and small wisps of white clouds overhead.

    Useppa Island Home

    Private home on Useppa Island—a little-known island located on the northern boundary of Pine Island Sound in Southwest Florida.  Rising seas, around 4500 BC, disconnected Useppa from the mainland.  Among other historical facts, the CIA used Useppa as its clandestine practice site for the failed Bay of Pigs invasion.
