    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  The only way to truly experience the islands is by sailboat, and we sailed them for a month. Women wear mola blouses with patterned skirts, red and yellow head scarfs, and arm and leg beads.  This intricate geometric beaded pattern needed to be hand strung, bead-by-bead, to display correctly on her small legs.  Image made while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • A 3-foot wide, shallow basket, made of out thick twigs, shows off 100 or more colorful Mexican peppers that fill the screen with green, yellow, orange, and bright red. Two small, white plastic bowls sit atop the stack of peppers with additional peppers arranged into a design like an opening flower—some leaning over the side of the bowl, and some pointing upwards.

This 3-foot wide basket of peppers completely covered the spectrum from green, yellow, orange, and bright red. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico. While the Benito Juarez Market isn't the only market in Oaxaca, it's a large and vibrant one with over 360 vendors selling ... everything.

  • Horizontal photo of an artist’s mural painted on the side of a building in the town of Grand-Bourg on the island of Marie-Galante.     Grand-Bourg Mural (2/2)

    The town of Grand-Bourg on the island of Marie-Galante, which is part of Guadeloupe, showcases some amazing murals that most visitors don't even notice.  Painted on walls and buildings, framed by rusty roofs and chained link fences, I admit these murals can be somewhat camouflaged by the village.  Artist unknown.  Part of a diptych.   • This night shot of the Leslie Hotel on Ocean Drive in Miami’s South Beach was taken from a drone hovering 40-feet across the street. Twin gold-lit vertical art deco fan facades reach from the second floor to the top of the roof. A red awning is brightly illuminated from the street level underneath, where tables are crowded with alfresco diners.   • Horizontal photo of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge that spans the entrance to Tampa Bay between St. Petersburg to the north (left), and Terra Ceia to the south (right). The bridge’s distinctive cable-stayed supports rise like two gigantic sails 250-feet high over the 180-foot bridge height on the right two-thirds of the image. (Total height 430-feet.) The sky behind the bridge, in the upper two thirds of the image, ranges from a muted grayish mauve on the horizon to a dusty mustard yellow at the top of the frame. Waters in the foreground reflect the gray-mauve horizon. On the left side of the photo, the bridge diminishes in perspective to a small point on the horizon.

    Skyway Bridge

    The Sunshine Skyway Bridge spans the southern tip of St. Petersburg, Florida, with Terra Ceia on the south side of Tampa Bay.  Here, I captured the cabled support systems of the bridge's sails with a backdrop of yellow-cast clouds after the sun had set.
