Taken from the deck of an anchored sailboat, we look six feet down to the blue waters of Bahia Honda, a bay off the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of Panama. Two wooden boats, each about the size of a canoe, float in the blue water with the apex of the canoes close to the camera and the sterns fanning out left and right in opposite directions. Each canoe holds two shirtless boys, ranging in age from 9 to 18-years old. The boys smile as they stare curiously at the sailboat in front of them, which they have paddled out to investigate.

Bahia Honda, Panama, became one of the most memorable anchorages of our Pacific cruise.  The howler monkeys on shore sounded like gorillas.  No photos of the gorillas, but these inquisitive boys paddled up for a look.  Bekki discovered from the boys that a small store was located at a nearby village—where she bought a cake mix for my 48th birthday.  Transparency taken with a Leicaflex while cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.
