    Mayan Shaman (2/2)

    While exploring Chicicastenango someone in the village informed us of a shaman couple that were performing a Mayan ceremony up on the hill.  Following a nearby trail, we found this husband and wife, and they allowed me to photograph them.  When I motioned to the husband to 'smile,' he lit up.  Husband and wife are a diptych.  Transparency taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

    Skyway Bridge

    The Sunshine Skyway Bridge spans the southern tip of St. Petersburg, Florida, with Terra Ceia on the south side of Tampa Bay.  Here, I captured the cabled support systems of the bridge's sails with a backdrop of yellow-cast clouds after the sun had set.

A strip of white sand, with shadowed splashes from the overhead palms, anchors the lower fifth of the image. Beyond the sand beach we see the light-turquoise Caribbean Sea—with a narrow strip of dark blue on the horizon where the waves break over distant coral reefs.     Capesterre

The mural is a portrait of a black man who appears to look directly at the camera’s lens. He squints into the direct sun, lips drawn tightly, giving the appearance of a mild grimace. White hair, white eyebrows, and white beard stubble frame his long face underneath a reddish-brown straw hat which is folded up above his forehead. His leading right shoulder dips forward slightly.   • Vertical zoomed photo of Trafalgar falls on the island of Dominica in the West Indies. The waterfall, centered in the image, plunges from a dark gray granite crevice at the top to the pool 125-feet below, which is obscured by thick layer of mist. A half-second exposure slightly blurs the cascading water. Green foliage clings to the vertical rockface on either side of the waterfall.

We look over the yacht’s port side, at a 45-degree angle, across the 2-foot teak deck, underneath two chrome stanchions which form an inverted V-shape, past the winch to the blue ocean and verdant green coastline of Dominica. Blue sky dotted by white cumulous clouds appears in the upper third of the image. In the shadows of the hard dodger, a woman gazes out over this tropical scene as the sailboat slices through the Caribbean sea under full sail.

  • Horizontal landscape scene on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Taken from the top of a hill, the photo provides a sweeping view of pineapple fields in the foreground and the island of Molokai on the distant horizon. Five distinct horizontal bands stripe across the image. Deep green pineapple fields, interlaced with terracotta colored access roads, comprise the lower third of the photo. Six tall palm trees form a tight cluster on the edge of the fields in the left third of the image half a mile away. Above the pineapple fields the blue Pacific Ocean, freckled by occasional tiny whitecaps, forms the straits between Maui and Molokai. In the upper third of the image, Molokai’s bluish-gray mountains—the world’s highest sea cliffs—rise from the ocean to reach an altitude of over 3,000 feet. Thick white cumulous clouds hover at the crest of the mountain ridgeline. Light blue sky forms the final band of color at the top of the photo.

    Maui Pineapple Fields Forever

    Pineapple cultivation used to be one of the largest industries on Maui.  However, many pineapple businesses closed in the 2000s.  Although there has been a resurgence in pineapple farming with hybrid grafting techniques, scenes like this one from 2000 have largely disappeared.

  • Horizontal landscape of the backcountry road to Hana on the island of Maui, Hawaii. We look down an empty, deep lavender gray, two-lane country road which extends across the bottom left side of the image. The road curves to the right around a bend several hundred feet away in the center. Dark blue mountains, tinted purple, cut across the horizon—their ridgelines reach up into heavy gray overcast clouds. The mountains dip down slightly where the road turns around the bend, forming a wide V-shaped skyline. Tall pale mint-colored grass meadows line both sides of the road. On the right side of the photo, a steep hill, covered in multiple shades of pastel green grass, climbs up from the road into the cloudy sky. Several deciduous trees have grown through the thick grass carpet. The scene is one of quiet solitude awash in soft grey, green, and purplish-blue hues.

    Road to Hana

  • Vertical photo of a steering wheel taken inside the cab of a 1940s vintage pickup truck that has been abandoned on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Protruding from the metal dashboard and supported by a small 2-inch diameter cylindrical post, the large white round wheel shows severe, deep cracks and flaking from age. In the upper right corner of the image the original thick glass windshield has broken in half vertically. Large rust spots pockmark the once white metal dashboard. Vines growing in from the open window entwine the interior of the cab, weaving through and around the steering wheel. Several of the vines are supple, fresh, and green; others dried and brown.

  • Vertical photo of a 1940s vintage pickup truck that has been abandoned on the island of Maui, Hawaii. The photo was taken from the left side of the truck, just behind the driver’s door. The front of the truck points to the image’s left. This is a tight shot of the driver’s door, cab, and left front fender. The truck’s hood has been removed. The driver’s side door has been spray painted a deep azure blue—which makes the truck stand out against the rusty brown cab roof. A shiny chrome door handle contrasts brightly against the blue door. Paint on the truck’s left front fender, the same deep azure blue, flakes away in large sheets, exposing the original light blue color underneath. A white flaking steering wheel can be seen through the driver’s window in the interior of the truck.

    Silver Roadster—Reflections (2/2)

    While visiting friends in Ellijay who rented a cabin there, we drove to Dawsonville.  The owner of this 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster had parked it just off the main square.  The roadster's silver finish and elegant curves captured my interest.

    Silver Roadster—Pipes (1/2)

    While visiting friends in Ellijay who rented a cabin there, we drove to Dawsonville.  The owner of this 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster had parked it just off the main square.  The roadster's silver finish and elegant curves captured my interest.

  • A tight vertical photo looking up from the base of the waterfall to the top of Amicalola Falls, at the Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia. The camera angle looks upward to the height of the falls about 150-feet away. A ¼-second exposure blurs the water as it cascades down from the upper left-half of the image to the right half in the middle, filling the full camera frame at the bottom. Green foliage and slick black rock surfaces frame the tumbling waterfall around the falling water.

    Amicalola Falls

    We drove to Amicalola Falls State Park while visiting friends who rented a cabin in Ellijay, Georgia.  This vantage point of the 729-foot waterfall requires walking down 600-stairs to the base.  Going down is not the problem.

  • Horizontal landscape photo of a sunset at Naples Beach, Florida. The sun, visible as a bright pinpoint just left of center on the horizon, 1/5th from the bottom of the photo, burns through a micro strip of dark gray clouds just at the ocean’s edge. The setting sun casts a golden sheen across a black-teal almost waveless Gulf of Mexico. The underside of clouds stretching across the upper 2/3 of the photo glow a faint but deep yellow gold from the diminishing sun. Distinctive colorful shapes from many other smaller clouds—bright white, dark gray, and deep gold—explode across a dark blue sky just above the horizon, like puffs of smoke from exploding fireworks.

    Naples Beach Sunset, 2018

    Golden sun on the horizon just at sunset on Naples Beach, Florida.  I made this image after Bekki and I had dinner in Naples.  The beach is a short walk down Fifth Avenue.
