  • Vertical photo of a steering wheel taken inside the cab of a 1940s vintage pickup truck that has been abandoned on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Protruding from the metal dashboard and supported by a small 2-inch diameter cylindrical post, the large white round wheel shows severe, deep cracks and flaking from age. In the upper right corner of the image the original thick glass windshield has broken in half vertically. Large rust spots pockmark the once white metal dashboard. Vines growing in from the open window entwine the interior of the cab, weaving through and around the steering wheel. Several of the vines are supple, fresh, and green; others dried and brown.

  • Horizontal landscape of the backcountry road to Hana on the island of Maui, Hawaii. We look down an empty, deep lavender gray, two-lane country road which extends across the bottom left side of the image. The road curves to the right around a bend several hundred feet away in the center. Dark blue mountains, tinted purple, cut across the horizon—their ridgelines reach up into heavy gray overcast clouds. The mountains dip down slightly where the road turns around the bend, forming a wide V-shaped skyline. Tall pale mint-colored grass meadows line both sides of the road. On the right side of the photo, a steep hill, covered in multiple shades of pastel green grass, climbs up from the road into the cloudy sky. Several deciduous trees have grown through the thick grass carpet. The scene is one of quiet solitude awash in soft grey, green, and purplish-blue hues.

  • Horizontal landscape scene on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Taken from the top of a hill, the photo provides a sweeping view of pineapple fields in the foreground and the island of Molokai on the distant horizon. Five distinct horizontal bands stripe across the image. Deep green pineapple fields, interlaced with terracotta colored access roads, comprise the lower third of the photo. Six tall palm trees form a tight cluster on the edge of the fields in the left third of the image half a mile away. Above the pineapple fields the blue Pacific Ocean, freckled by occasional tiny whitecaps, forms the straits between Maui and Molokai. In the upper third of the image, Molokai’s bluish-gray mountains—the world’s highest sea cliffs—rise from the ocean to reach an altitude of over 3,000 feet.     Maui Pineapple Fields Forever

    Pineapple cultivation used to be one of the largest industries on Maui.  However, many pineapple businesses closed in the 2000s.  Although there has been a resurgence in pineapple farming with hybrid grafting techniques, scenes like this one from 2000 have largely disappeared.

We look over the yacht’s port side, at a 45-degree angle, across the 2-foot teak deck, underneath two chrome stanchions which form an inverted V-shape, past the winch to the blue ocean and verdant green coastline of Dominica.   • Horizontal photo of an artist’s mural painted on the side of a building in the town of Grand-Bourg on the island of Marie-Galante. The mural is a stylized portrait of a man’s long, slender, triangular face. His forehead just above the eyebrows, and bottom of his chin, extend off the top and bottom of the image, forming a tight composition. The artist has rendered the face in shades of light blue with dark shadows of deep black over a light gray concrete background. Patches of concrete show through underneath painted elements of the face’s mottled montage. The subject’s full, closed lips—painted in black on the top lip; and blue on the bottom—center a narrow black jaw and chin that tapers off the bottom edge. Large round light green, mustard yellow, and white eyes, with jet black pupils, stare penetratingly forward over a long thin nose.   • orizontal photo of the beach in the town of Capesterre on the island of Marie-Galante in the Caribbean. A strip of white sand, with shadowed splashes from the overhead palms, anchors the lower fifth of the image. Beyond the sand beach we see the light-turquoise Caribbean Sea—with a narrow strip of dark blue on the horizon where the waves break over distant coral reefs. From the beach, the camera looks upward following tall, skinny, wind-swept palms that lean in from both edges of the photo against a pure blue, cloudless sky in the upper two-thirds of the image. Rounded circles of palm fronds at the top of each palm tree hover in the sky like small bursts of green fireworks in the upper third of the image.

    Capesterre

  • Horizontal photo of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge that spans the entrance to Tampa Bay between St. Petersburg to the north (left), and Terra Ceia to the south (right). The bridge’s distinctive cable-stayed supports rise like two gigantic sails 250-feet high over the 180-foot bridge height on the right two-thirds of the image. (Total height 430-feet.) The sky behind the bridge, in the upper two thirds of the image, ranges from a muted grayish mauve on the horizon to a dusty mustard yellow at the top of the frame.     Skyway Bridge

    While exploring Chicicastenango someone in the village informed us of a shaman couple that were performing a Mayan ceremony up on the hill.  Following a nearby trail, we found this husband and wife, and they allowed me to photograph them.  When I motioned to the husband to 'smile,' he lit up.  Husband and wife are a diptych.  Transparency taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

The statue’s pose, actions, and direction of his gaze almost perfectly mirror Pedro. We see additional cigar-related paraphernalia in the window adjacent to the statue: a B&W photograph of another man smoking, what appears to be the straw hat of the man in the photo on the surface below adjacent to a photograph of the same hat.

Little Havana is a neighborhood in Miami that is home to many Cuban exiles. The neighborhood is known for Cuban culture, food, and cigars.

Bands of bright green neon lights stretch across each of the three-story balconies, in between a checkerboard of backlit and unlit windows. Columns of multicolored lights between the windows on the second and third levels spotlight the building's long, white façade with pillars of intense blue, red, purple, green, and yellow. Ten square umbrellas line Ocean Drive, underneath which a hundred or more patrons dine alfresco. A man with a white shirt and white panama had stands at the entrance to the restaurant looking inside.

  • Taken from a drone at night hovering at 30-feet over Ocean Boulevard in South Beach, Miami, the Colony Hotel and Boulevard Hotel fill most of this landscape image. Baby blue lights illuminate the Colony’s façade, and blue neon outlines the letters on the hotel’s inverted-T sign, with the word ‘Colony’ reaching vertically from the second story to the roof.   • Looking southwest and down the street from the center of brick-paved First Street in downtown Fort Myers, both curbs diminish toward the vanishing point almost 1-mile distant. Streetlamps in front of 30-foot palm trees line the avenue and illuminate Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza and Cabos Cantina in the foreground. The street is completely empty as the black sky overhead slowly fades to dawn. At the end of the street, and in the center of the photograph, High Point Place, a 33-story high-rise condominium, faintly catches early rays of the rising sun.
