    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  The only way to truly experience the islands is by sailboat, and we sailed them for a month. Women wear mola blouses with patterned skirts, red and yellow head scarfs, and arm and leg beads.  This intricate geometric beaded pattern needed to be hand strung, bead-by-bead, to display correctly on her small legs.  Image made while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • Vertical portrait of man dressed for the carnival celebration of lent in the village of Tilcajete, Mexico. The man has painted his face in light-blue paint, which covers his forehead down to his chin. The blue paint also covers his short mustache and beard. He has painted three blue vertical lines down his face, across his eyes and cheeks; and down the middle of his forehead, nose, and chin. He wears a paper-mache jaguar head mask like a hat on the top of his head. About 35-peacock feathers protrude from the back of his head in a 180-degree arc. Over the top of a brown and white tie-dyed shirt, red-dyed corn and brown acorn necklaces hang around his neck.

    Blue man Tilcajete carnival

    Prior to Ash Wednesday the village of Tilcajete, near Oaxaca, celebrates carnival with imaginative animal and creature masks in chanting, grunting, colorful processions. Here, a carnival celebrant wears blue face paint with a jaguar mask on top of his head, and peacock feathers fanned out behind his head. (I have a similar shot of his female companion.) Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

  • Vertical photo of a 1940s vintage pickup truck that has been abandoned on the island of Maui, Hawaii. The photo was taken from the left side of the truck, just behind the driver’s door. The front of the truck points to the image’s left. This is a tight shot of the driver’s door, cab, and left front fender. The truck’s hood has been removed. The driver’s side door has been spray painted a deep azure blue—which makes the truck stand out against the rusty brown cab roof. A shiny chrome door handle contrasts brightly against the blue door. Paint on the truck’s left front fender, the same deep azure blue, flakes away in large sheets, exposing the original light blue color underneath. A white flaking steering wheel can be seen through the driver’s window in the interior of the truck.

  • Vertical photo of a steering wheel taken inside the cab of a 1940s vintage pickup truck that has been abandoned on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Protruding from the metal dashboard and supported by a small 2-inch diameter cylindrical post, the large white round wheel shows severe, deep cracks and flaking from age. In the upper right corner of the image the original thick glass windshield has broken in half vertically. Large rust spots pockmark the once white metal dashboard. Vines growing in from the open window entwine the interior of the cab, weaving through and around the steering wheel. Several of the vines are supple, fresh, and green; others dried and brown.

A window in the shape of a crucifix, constructed of narrow 4-inch glass strips, angles from the bottom right third of the image and extends to the top where it intersects at the center edge.     Crimson Crosses

The whitewater waterfall is framed in the center of the image surrounded by lush green tropical forest. An observation deck can be seen to the upper right from where the falls starts.     The Sydney Opera House triptych is from transparencies shot with a Leicaflex in the 1980s.  In addition to the profile of the entire building I decided to focus several shots on close-ups of the sail roof.  This highlights the architecture with abstract perspectives that are relatively unique.

    A Rastafarian on the island of Saint Martin.  His dark skin and white shirt in full sun presented some exposure and white balance challenges—which required a lot of work in Capture One post-production.

  • A vertical portrait of a mother and daughter on the island of St. Martin in the Caribbean. Mother and daughter fill most of the frame, except for a huge white cloud that extends from the mother’s shoulders to the top of the image—apart from blue sky in the upper left and right corners of the photo. The mother, in her twenties, wears a gold sleeveless tank top and a gold necklace with a heart-shaped pendant, which contrasts brightly against her dark skin. She smiles broadly as she faces the camera. Her hands braid her daughter’s hair, who sits in front of and below her. The daughter, who also looks directly at the camera, scrunches up her eyes, nose, and mouth—reacting to mom who is pulling her hair into tight braids.

  • Vertical closeup photo of a Mercedes Benz 1937 540K Special Roadster’s front hood. The image is taken from the front left side of the vehicle looking down to the fender and hood. The most prominent feature in the image is the front left fender in the lower left half of the photo: a smoothly curved silver paint metal that forms a large tear-drop shape. Looking down into the highly polished fender we see diffused images of clouds in the sky. In the lower left corner, on top of the fender, an orange teardrop turn signal light contrasts against the silver fender. The fender sweeps back like a ski jump to the mounting step at the top left of the image. Above the fender several lines of chrome trim and a chrome mesh grill cuts at a 45-degree angle from the top left of the photo to the bottom right.     Silver Roadster—Reflections (2/2)

    While visiting friends in Ellijay who rented a cabin there, we drove to Dawsonville.  The owner of this 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster had parked it just off the main square.  The roadster's silver finish and elegant curves captured my interest.

  • A brightly lit vertical photo, taken from the bottom of a stairway with 12 steps, looks up to the top of the stairs. At the top we see bright light coming in from an invisible window off to the left of the landing. Bright yellow light illuminates the landing at the top of the stairs, which refracts down onto orange-colored walls and orange carpeted stairs below. On the wall at the top of the stairs we see abstract artwork of sailboat sails within a vertical white frame around it. Inside the white frame is a lavender rectangular border. Inside the lavender border is a black rectangular border. Inside the black border is a yellow rectangular border. Inside the yellow rectangular border, we see a gradient background—from solid yellow at the top to a solid red ocean with whitecaps at the bottom. The yellow-red background provides a backdrop to the orange sails bending in the wind. A brown varnished wooden banister, reflecting deep orange tones from the adjacent walls, reaches from the lower left bottom of the image to the top left, just in front of the landing.

    Stairway to Heaven

    This was actually the stairway to the locker rooms at the Acapulco Yacht Club.  But 'Stairway to Heaven' sounds a bit more evocative.  Every morning, light flooded the top of the stairs, amplifying the orange walls and carpet.  Love those Mexican colors.  Image made while cruising Mexico in our sailboat 2000.

  • Tikal, Guatemala. Temple II (Temple of the Masks) fills the photo from the perspective of standing at ground level looking at the pyramid’s left-front corner. A long flight of steep stairs starts at the lower right of the image and climb at a 45-degree angle to the left in the center. The temple is framed by blue sky and white clouds at the top, green grass t ground level, and a few trees both left and right. Sun fills the temple face and stairs, as a lone figure in a red shirt scrambles up the steep steps.

    Tikal became the most powerful kingdom of the ancient Maya, and it is awe-inspiring.  This shot of Temple II (Temple of the Masks) gives some perspective to the incredible design and construction required for Tikal's temples.  Taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • Deep blue sky frames the upper half of this vertical photo of The Baths in the British Virgin Islands. White cumulus clouds form a puffy strip across the middle of the photo, just above the horizon line. Sailboats at anchor from another stripe of white just below the clouds. Beige sand, damp from a receding wave, fills the foreground. Huge boulder stacks, on the left and right side of the photo, reach half-way up into the image, and 100-feet out into the water. Crystal clear rippled wavelets cover the beige sand in the middle of the photo, stretching out into turquoise waters of Devil’s Bay.

  • Vertical zoomed photo of Trafalgar falls on the island of Dominica in the West Indies. The waterfall, centered in the image, plunges from a dark gray granite crevice at the top to the pool 125-feet below, which is obscured by thick layer of mist. A half-second exposure slightly blurs the cascading water. Green foliage clings to the vertical rockface on either side of the waterfall.

  • This vertical photograph, taken in the Guna Yala region of Panama shows, multiple bands of sand, water, and sky: from light beige of the sandy beach at the bottom, to a darker beige where water recedes back into the ocean, to a light teal of the waves as they first make contact with the sandy beach, to a dark teal 30-feet away, to a dark blue on the ocean’s horizon, to a sky blue with a few white puffy clouds above the horizon.
