• A landscape (layout) photo taken from the cockpit of a sailboat under sail in the Gulf of Chiriqui, on Panama’s Pacific coast. The horizon bisects the image horizontally, balanced with blue sky above and blue ocean below. Golden clouds can be seen on the left edge of the photo from an off-camera sunset. The forward half of a sailboat’s cockpit, mast, and bow is visible on the right side of the image. Its boom stretches from overhead to the mast in the center of the image, where it intersects with the horizon.     30 Knots in the Gulf of Chiriqui

    This is one of my favorite photos from my 3-years of cruising the Pacific on our Hallberg-Rassy 42, 'Andante.'  We were sailing in flat seas in the Gulf of Chiriqui as we made our way toward the Panama Canal.  Suddenly, wind and seas perked up with no clouds anywhere.  My friend and accomplished sailor, Chris Brown, on a close reach as the sun set on the horizon.  Transparency taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • Vertical portrait of man dressed for the carnival celebration of lent in the village of Tilcajete, Mexico. The man has painted his face in light-blue paint, which covers his forehead down to his chin. The blue paint also covers his short mustache and beard. He has painted three blue vertical lines down his face, across his eyes and cheeks; and down the middle of his forehead, nose, and chin. He wears a paper-mache jaguar head mask like a hat on the top of his head. About 35-peacock feathers protrude from the back of his head in a 180-degree arc. Over the top of a brown and white tie-dyed shirt, red-dyed corn and brown acorn necklaces hang around his neck.

    Blue man Tilcajete carnival

    Prior to Ash Wednesday the village of Tilcajete, near Oaxaca, celebrates carnival with imaginative animal and creature masks in chanting, grunting, colorful processions. Here, a carnival celebrant wears blue face paint with a jaguar mask on top of his head, and peacock feathers fanned out behind his head. (I have a similar shot of his female companion.) Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

  • Horizontal photo of shirtless man dressed for the carnival celebration of lent in the village of Tilcajete, Mexico.     Hand Made Cigars

    Mayan Shaman (2/2)

    While exploring Chicicastenango someone in the village informed us of a shaman couple that were performing a Mayan ceremony up on the hill.  Following a nearby trail, we found this husband and wife, and they allowed me to photograph them.  When I motioned to the husband to 'smile,' he lit up.  Husband and wife are a diptych.  Transparency taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • This landscape photo, from the Guna Yala region of Panama, shows dark powder blue water below the horizon, in the middle of the image; and a similarly dark powder blue sky—all through the filter of an imperceptibly light fog. In the middle of the photo, at the horizon line, a small round island is visible. The island is 150-200 feet away, and maybe another 100-feet in diameter. A cluster of dark green and dark teal palm trees rises from every inch of the island, 50-60 feet high. Intersecting the lower left third of the image we see a dugout canoe which is almost parallel to the lens. The stern is slightly more distant than the bow, which is tied to a stick jutting out of the water two canoe-lengths to the right. A fisherman sits in the canoe, his back to us, arms stretched out sideways, as he manages the fishing line.

    Misty Fisherman

    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  This lone fisherman worked in solitude as the quiet of the evening mist closed around him.  Image taken while cruising the San Blas in our sailboat 2001.

    Raices Fountain (2/2)

    Raices Fountain, located in the historic colonial section of San Juan, is said to be one of the most romantic spots in Old San Juan.  I wouldn't know—Bekki was off with someone else when I took these shots.  Image #2 of a diptych.  San Juan was part of our Caribbean cruise in 2008.

  • A Rastafarian man, on the island of St. Martin in the Caribbean, smiles gently at the camera.     A Rastafarian on the island of Saint Martin.  His dark skin and white shirt in full sun presented some exposure and white balance challenges—which required a lot of work in Capture One post-production.

  • This landscape portrait of a chef in San Salvador, El Salvador, shows him in a double-breasted, white chef’s uniform. He is a young, handsome El Salvadoran man in his late twenties. He faces the camera directly. In the bottom of the frame, we see his torso just above his elbows. His right shoulder is positioned just below center in the image. He leans to his left, such that his face is in the right 1/3 of the frame. He wears a 2-foot-high white chef’s hat that leans upward and to the right at a 25-degree angle. Dark green tropical foliage blurs in the background on the left side and right edge of the photo, making his white uniform and conspicuously tall hat pop in the foreground.

    San Salvador Chef
