    30 Knots in the Gulf of Chiriqui

    This is one of my favorite photos from my 3-years of cruising the Pacific on our Hallberg-Rassy 42, 'Andante.'  We were sailing in flat seas in the Gulf of Chiriqui as we made our way toward the Panama Canal.  Suddenly, wind and seas perked up with no clouds anywhere.  My friend and accomplished sailor, Chris Brown, on a close reach as the sun set on the horizon.  Transparency taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • Off the forward bow of our observation boat, a Hobie 16 catamaran under full sail hikes up out of the water in front of us. Leaning heavily to port, its forward starboard pontoon flies 4-5 feet in the air out of the blue Gulf of Mexico. Only the forward part of the white port-side pontoon is visible—the aft is buried deep in the water as the Hobie jets past us at 15-20 knots. The cat’s black mast leans 45-degrees to port, jib and mainsail stretched tight in the wind. The sailor closest to me in blue hikes out over the starboard side of the pontoon. His companion in yellow leans further out to starboard, tethered with a safety harness that keeps him from flying off the boat.

    Hiking Out

    The 22nd Hobie 16 World race was held on Captiva Island, Florida, on November, 2019.  Sailors hike out to windward to counter the force of the wind on the sails during one of the races.  The starboard pontoon is about 5-6 feet out of the water.

  • Bright blue sky frames the upper 2/3s of this landscape image. In the lower 1/3 of the image we see blue-green water from the Gulf of Mexico to the left; and a sandy beach to the right. Wave action has dampened the sand at the bottom of the image and to the right further up the beach. 60 feet away 20 Hobie 16 catamaran sailboats are lined up down the beach ready to launch for a race. Every sailboat has the same bright orange mainsail with a white palm tree and darker orange sunset on top of a 3-foot white strip along the bottom of the sail. The masts diminish down to the horizon line. The damp sand between the camera and the sailboats reflects the blue sky and orange sails.

    Orange Sails Blue Horizon

  • Off the forward bow of our observation boat, a Hobie 16 catamaran under full sail passes us through the water off our bow. The forward sailor trims the orange and white mainsail and jib into a tight reach as the salt water from the Gulf of Mexico foams up and sprays behind the cat. The aft sailor grips the black tiller rod, focusing intently on the horizon. The Gulf of Mexico comprises the lower two-thirds of the frame—a deep blue backdrop to the Hobie 16 as it passes us in a “swoosh.”

  • Horizontal landscape photo taken from the cockpit of a 43-foot sloop sailing off the coast of Dominica in the West Indies. We look over the yacht’s port side, at a 45-degree angle, across the 2-foot teak deck, underneath two chrome stanchions which form an inverted V-shape, past the winch to the blue ocean and verdant green coastline of Dominica. Blue sky dotted by white cumulous clouds appears in the upper third of the image. In the shadows of the hard dodger, a woman gazes out over this tropical scene as the sailboat slices through the Caribbean sea under full sail.

  • This landscape photo, from the Guna Yala region of Panama, is taken from the perspective of standing on an island beach. In the lower 1/5 of the image we see a small flat wave receding from a dark mauve colored sand. The edge of the water ripples and foams as it pulls away from the beach. Above the receding wave, up to the horizon line in the middle of the photo, various shades of teal-colored water wrinkle from a soft breeze. In the middle of the photo, about 150-feet away, we see a ketch at anchor, its bow facing left into the wind. The setting sun, which is off camera to the right, illuminates the port side of the yacht in a soft golden light. Directly behind the sailboat, and perhaps another 100-feet distant, a small island with dark palm trees provides a backdrop to the bow, stern, and top of the glowing sailboat. A blue sky peeks through many clouds in the top half of the image. Clouds on the right side of the photo are also illuminated by the setting sun, which accents the blue sky with shades of gold, yellow, gray, and lavender.

    San Blas Anchorage

    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  The only way to truly experience the islands is by sailboat, and we sailed them for a month. Walking the beach on one of these many islands, I looked up to see this ketch gently illuminated by the setting sun.  Shot while cruising the San Blas in our sailboat 2001.
