  • This portrait landscape photo is taken from the side of a mountain at about 2,500 feet of elevation on the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean. It looks out to the two pitons (ancient volcanic plugs) in the upper center of the photograph, perhaps a mile or more away.     A World Heritage Site, the two Pitons are mountainous volcanic plugs on the island of Saint Lucia.  As we wound our way down the road I asked our driver to stop when I spotted this composition, with the town of Soufriere in the foreground framed by the Caribbean Sea in the background.

  • This vertical photograph, taken in the Guna Yala region of Panama shows, multiple bands of sand, water, and sky: from light beige of the sandy beach at the bottom, to a darker beige where water recedes back into the ocean, to a light teal of the waves as they first make contact with the sandy beach, to a dark teal 30-feet away, to a dark blue on the ocean’s horizon, to a sky blue with a few white puffy clouds above the horizon.     The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  We sailed the archipelago for a month anchoring at various islands, snorkeling, and exploring.  I love this shot because of nature's tropical gradients from white sand to sky blue.  Taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

The waterfall, centered in the image, plunges from a dark gray granite crevice at the top to the pool 125-feet below, which is obscured by thick layer of mist.     I shot several images of the Cuba Tobacco Cigar Company during a shooting trip to Little Havana in Miami. Here the store owners inspect a shipment of tobacco leaves in preparation for cutting and rolling. Little Havana is a neighborhood in Miami that is home to many Cuban exiles. The neighborhood is known for Cuban culture, food, and cigars.

  • A close-up landscape layout photo of handmade maracas clustered together in a public market in San Salvador, El Salvador. The maracas are made from small round gourds, about 4-5 inches in diameter. Each set of maracas has been carved with matching patterns (zigzags, pinwheels, nested arcs, clouds, and cactus leaves) and painted red with accent colors of dark lime green, dark teal, dark blue, and deep purple. Red wooden handles have been attached to each gourd. We can only see the maraca heads in the photo except for two maracas paired together vertically in the left third of the image—the maraca heads at the top of the image, and the handles at the bottom. This pair rests on other maraca heads underneath. Both red maracas have been carved with the words “El Salvador,” which have been painted in a dark blue around a carved-out background painted white.

  • This landscape photo, from the Boca del Toro region of Panama, shows a wooden pier jutting out from the right side of the image. The pier’s walkway is exactly on the horizon line. At the end of the pier, almost on the left side of the image, we see three separate thatched roofs held up by thin log supports. A soft golden light from the setting sun highlight the thin edge of the pier and thatched roofs facing the camera. The water, a muddy blue-teal pastel, is calm except for long ripples that turn the reflected roofs into dark brown, striated streaks on the surface. A bright blue sky provides a colorful contrast to the bright golden thatched roofs.

  • Tikal, Guatemala. Temple II (Temple of the Masks) fills the photo from the perspective of standing at ground level looking at the pyramid’s left-front corner.   • This landscape photo taken in Tikal, Guatemala, looks over the top of a jungle canopy in the lower 2/3s of the image, its colors ranging from bright lime to deep forest green. We look down on the archeological ruins of the Temple of Talud and Tablero in the lower left third of the image, and up to the Temple of the Double Headed Serpent in the upper right corner with its roof comb high above the treeline. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

    Stairway to Heaven

    This was actually the stairway to the locker rooms at the Acapulco Yacht Club.  But 'Stairway to Heaven' sounds a bit more evocative.  Every morning, light flooded the top of the stairs, amplifying the orange walls and carpet.  Love those Mexican colors.  Image made while cruising Mexico in our sailboat 2000.

The bridge’s distinctive cable-stayed supports rise like two gigantic sails 250-feet high over the 180-foot bridge height on the right two-thirds of the image. (Total height 430-feet.)     Skyway Bridge

    The Sunshine Skyway Bridge spans the southern tip of St. Petersburg, Florida, with Terra Ceia on the south side of Tampa Bay.  Here, I captured the cabled support systems of the bridge's sails with a backdrop of yellow-cast clouds after the sun had set.

    While visiting friends in Ellijay who rented a cabin there, we drove to Dawsonville.  The owner of this 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster had parked it just off the main square.  The roadster's silver finish and elegant curves captured my interest.

  • Shipwrecked. This image is a landscape photo of a tiny island in the Guna Yala region of Panama. We see a medium close-up of a woman standing on a large driftwood log in the center of the frame. She gazes through binoculars towards the left edge of the photo, searching for rescue. A stiff wind blows her medium-length blond hair off of her face. The sun-bleached driftwood log that she stands on is surrounded by white sand, but the ocean is only a few feet away. Beyond the island a dark blue Caribbean Sea churns over nearby coral reefs, while the blue sky darkens behind her.

    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  We sailed the archipelago for a month.  One day we found this little round little button of an island with white sand, one palm tree, and a grounded freighter in the background.  So we decided to do a 'shipwrecked' triptych.  Bekki donned a dress.  I rowed her to the island in our dinghy, and then rowed away to photograph.  That's trust!  Images made while we were cruising the San Blas in our sailboat 2001.
