Baby blue lights illuminate the Colony’s façade, and blue neon outlines the letters on the hotel’s inverted-T sign, with the word ‘Colony’ reaching vertically from the second story to the roof.     Mola Seamstress

    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  The only way to truly experience the islands is by sailboat, and we sailed them for a month.  They sell fruit, vegetables, and handmade mola textiles to the cruisers.  Women wear mola blouses with patterned skirts, red and yellow head scarfs, arm and leg beads, long black lines down the nose, and often a gold nose ring.  This woman hopped on deck to sell her mola inventory.  Taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • This landscape photo, from the Guna Yala region of Panama, shows dark powder blue water below the horizon, in the middle of the image; and a similarly dark powder blue sky—all through the filter of an imperceptibly light fog. In the middle of the photo, at the horizon line, a small round island is visible. The island is 150-200 feet away, and maybe another 100-feet in diameter. A cluster of dark green and dark teal palm trees rises from every inch of the island, 50-60 feet high. Intersecting the lower left third of the image we see a dugout canoe which is almost parallel to the lens. The stern is slightly more distant than the bow, which is tied to a stick jutting out of the water two canoe-lengths to the right. A fisherman sits in the canoe, his back to us, arms stretched out sideways, as he manages the fishing line.

    Wall of colorful Mayan textiles hanging in a market in Chichicastenango, Guatemala.  This image taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat from 2000-2001.  We rented a car in Guatemala City and drove to the city of Antigua and the surrounding area, including Chichicastenango.  I titled this "Mayan Spirits" not only because of the Mayan stories and themes embedded into this wonderfully colorful embroidery—but also because you can almost feel the ancestral spirits everywhere in this magical country.

  • Horizontal landscape scene on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Taken from the top of a hill, the photo provides a sweeping view of pineapple fields in the foreground and the island of Molokai on the distant horizon. Five distinct horizontal bands stripe across the image. Deep green pineapple fields, interlaced with terracotta colored access roads, comprise the lower third of the photo. Six tall palm trees form a tight cluster on the edge of the fields in the left third of the image half a mile away. Above the pineapple fields the blue Pacific Ocean, freckled by occasional tiny whitecaps, forms the straits between Maui and Molokai. In the upper third of the image, Molokai’s bluish-gray mountains—the world’s highest sea cliffs—rise from the ocean to reach an altitude of over 3,000 feet. Thick white cumulous clouds hover at the crest of the mountain ridgeline. Light blue sky forms the final band of color at the top of the photo.

    Maui Pineapple Fields Forever

    Pineapple cultivation used to be one of the largest industries on Maui.  However, many pineapple businesses closed in the 2000s.  Although there has been a resurgence in pineapple farming with hybrid grafting techniques, scenes like this one from 2000 have largely disappeared.

  • Leaning Windward

The whitewater waterfall is framed in the center of the image surrounded by lush green tropical forest. An observation deck can be seen to the upper right from where the falls starts.   • Inn and Spa at Loretto, Santa Fe

    Inn at Loretto Adobe Geometry

    The Inn and Spa at Loretto is located on the Old Santa Fe Trail, just southeast of downtown Santa Fe. The hotel's abstract geometric adobe block architecture, punctuated with brown metal gutters that look like wooden support beams jutting out from the walls; and the shadows from the morning sun, caught my attention.

  • This landscape layout photo shows a street scene in Huatulco, Mexico. At the bottom of the image, we see the street, just above which there is a 9-inch curb and sidewalk. The back of the sidewalk intersects with an orange stucco wall at about 1/3 of the image height. A leafless tree trunk extends from the middle of the sidewalk up out of the top of the frame, branching into three smaller trunks in the upper third of the photo. On either side of the tree trunk two men lie asleep on their backs. They lie parallel to each other at an angle to the sidewalk: heads to the left, toros stretching to the curb where their knees bend above the edge, with their feet planted on the street. Street, curb, sidewalk, and tree are all a similar shade of gray. Yellow leaves have blown into the corner of the street and curb. A bright shaft of light spills down just behind the tree, highlighting the orange stucco wall. It’s a peaceful afternoon siesta in Huatulco.

    Huatulco Siesta

    Walking around Huatulco, Mexico, one afternoon, I turned the corner to find two men taking a sidewalk siesta in the afternoon heat.  This was one of those photographer moments when panic struck: can I get the camera up, shutter speed set, lens focused, and get the shot off before they stirred?  Yes!  Was it all that time behind the lens that paid off?  Probably not.  They were really zonked out.  (Or maybe a little bit of both.)  This is one of my favorite images from Mexico.  Image made while cruising Mexico in our sailboat 2000.

  • Off the forward bow of our observation boat, a Hobie 16 catamaran under full sail hikes up out of the water in front of us. Leaning heavily to port, its forward starboard pontoon flies 4-5 feet in the air out of the blue Gulf of Mexico. Only the forward part of the white port-side pontoon is visible—the aft is buried deep in the water as the Hobie jets past us at 15-20 knots. The cat’s black mast leans 45-degrees to port, jib and mainsail stretched tight in the wind. The sailor closest to me in blue hikes out over the starboard side of the pontoon. His companion in yellow leans further out to starboard, tethered with a safety harness that keeps him from flying off the boat.

    Hiking Out

    The 22nd Hobie 16 World race was held on Captiva Island, Florida, on November, 2019.  Sailors hike out to windward to counter the force of the wind on the sails during one of the races.  The starboard pontoon is about 5-6 feet out of the water.

    More wonderful geometric patterns and earthen colors in these Guatemalan embroidered ... belts?  I'm not sure exactly what these would be used for.  Perhaps if the cord is worn out on the bell you ring the butler with.  This image works alone, or as a diptych with image #2.  Taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

The mural is a stylized portrait of a man’s long, slender, triangular face. His forehead just above the eyebrows, and bottom of his chin, extend off the top and bottom of the image, forming a tight composition. The artist has rendered the face in shades of light blue with dark shadows of deep black over a light gray concrete background. Patches of concrete show through underneath painted elements of the face’s mottled montage. The subject’s full, closed lips—painted in black on the top lip; and blue on the bottom—center a narrow black jaw and chin that tapers off the bottom edge. Large round light green, mustard yellow, and white eyes, with jet black pupils, stare penetratingly forward over a long thin nose. Green, blue, yellow swirls and splashes of graffiti-styled paint and gray concrete surround the face, which is outlined in a thin white line, making it appear to hover over the background.

  • Horizontal photo of an artist’s mural painted on the side of a building in the town of Grand-Bourg on the island of Marie-Galante. The mural is a portrait of a black man who appears to look directly at the camera’s lens. He squints into the direct sun, lips drawn tightly, giving the appearance of a mild grimace. White hair, white eyebrows, and white beard stubble frame his long face underneath a reddish-brown straw hat which is folded up above his forehead. His leading right shoulder dips forward slightly. An open shirt, with large light blue and white vertical stripes, opens to his black-skinned chest. Multiple colors of green: pastel teal, lime, mint, olive, and pine, surround his head and shoulders. A metal door comprises most of the building wall. Hinges, strips of metal brackets, and rivets define the mural’s background texture. At the top of the photo weathered 2x4s and a rusted corrugated roof protrude above the top of the building.

  • Horizontal photo of a white door with full-length blue shutters on either side in coastal town of Grand-Bourg on Marie-Galante Island in the Caribbean. Two full length panes of rippled glass divide the white door, which appears in the right side of the image. The long shutters on either side of the door are built with narrow planks of wood, framed with two Z-shaped supports that zig zag across the inside of the shutters. The Z-shaped pieces of wood cast deep shadows in the overhead sun. To the left of the door and its open shutters we see another set of blue shutters which are closed. The exterior wall has been painted a light beige.

  • Horizontal photo of an abandoned 1950s truck on the island of Maui, Hawaii taken from the left front side of the vehicle, about 10-feet distant. The truck’s surface is covered with rust. Some would-be graffiti artist has spray painted various random designs on the front grill, hood, and cab—stars, circles, swirls, and stripes—with yellow, blue, green, and red paint. Both headlights are long gone. An old tire still clings to the rusted front wheel. Rocks have been thrown through the front window, which angles back slightly from a vertical center divider, leaving shards of broken glass around the edges. The driver’s door is ajar.

  • Looking southwest and down the street from the center of brick-paved First Street in downtown Fort Myers, both curbs diminish toward the vanishing point almost 1-mile distant. Streetlamps in front of 30-foot palm trees line the avenue and illuminate Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza and Cabos Cantina in the foreground. The street is completely empty as the black sky overhead slowly fades to dawn. At the end of the street, and in the center of the photograph, High Point Place, a 33-story high-rise condominium, faintly catches early rays of the rising sun.
