    30 Knots in the Gulf of Chiriqui

    This is one of my favorite photos from my 3-years of cruising the Pacific on our Hallberg-Rassy 42, 'Andante.'  We were sailing in flat seas in the Gulf of Chiriqui as we made our way toward the Panama Canal.  Suddenly, wind and seas perked up with no clouds anywhere.  My friend and accomplished sailor, Chris Brown, on a close reach as the sun set on the horizon.  Transparency taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • A tight vertical photo looking up from the base of the waterfall to the top of Amicalola Falls, at the Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia. The camera angle looks upward to the height of the falls about 150-feet away. A ¼-second exposure blurs the water as it cascades down from the upper left-half of the image to the right half in the middle, filling the full camera frame at the bottom. Green foliage and slick black rock surfaces frame the tumbling waterfall around the falling water.

    We drove to Amicalola Falls State Park while visiting friends who rented a cabin in Ellijay, Georgia.  This vantage point of the 729-foot waterfall requires walking down 600-stairs to the base.  Going down is not the problem.

  • A 3-foot wide, shallow basket, made of out thick twigs, shows off 100 or more colorful Mexican peppers that fill the screen with green, yellow, orange, and bright red. Two small, white plastic bowls sit atop the stack of peppers with additional peppers arranged into a design like an opening flower—some leaning over the side of the bowl, and some pointing upwards.

While the Benito Juarez Market isn't the only market in Oaxaca, it's a large and vibrant one with over 360 vendors selling ... everything.

The man has painted his face in light-blue paint, which covers his forehead down to his chin. The blue paint also covers his short mustache and beard. He has painted three blue vertical lines down his face, across his eyes and cheeks; and down the middle of his forehead, nose, and chin. He wears a paper-mache jaguar head mask like a hat on the top of his head. About 35-peacock feathers protrude from the back of his head in a 180-degree arc.     Blue man Tilcajete carnival

    Prior to Ash Wednesday the village of Tilcajete, near Oaxaca, celebrates carnival with imaginative animal and creature masks in chanting, grunting, colorful processions. Here, a carnival celebrant wears blue face paint with a jaguar mask on top of his head, and peacock feathers fanned out behind his head. (I have a similar shot of his female companion.) Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

  • Horizontal photo of a 1940s vintage pickup truck that has been abandoned on the island of Maui, Hawaii. The photo was taken from the right side of the truck, with the front of the truck pointing to the image’s right. The truck’s bulbous rounded cab appears just large enough for two people.   • Vertical photo of a steering wheel taken inside the cab of a 1940s vintage pickup truck that has been abandoned on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Protruding from the metal dashboard and supported by a small 2-inch diameter cylindrical post, the large white round wheel shows severe, deep cracks and flaking from age. In the upper right corner of the image the original thick glass windshield has broken in half vertically. Large rust spots pockmark the once white metal dashboard. Vines growing in from the open window entwine the interior of the cab, weaving through and around the steering wheel. Several of the vines are supple, fresh, and green; others dried and brown.

Beyond the sand beach we see the light-turquoise Caribbean Sea—with a narrow strip of dark blue on the horizon where the waves break over distant coral reefs.     Capesterre

    Capesterre is a sleepy village on the southwest coast of Marie-Galante—part of the French overseas region and the island of Guadeloupe.  Coral reefs that have formed in the Atlantic protect its port and beautiful beaches.  Image made while sailing with friends in the West Indies.

    Crimson Crosses

  • Taken from the deck of an anchored sailboat, we look six feet down to the blue waters of Bahia Honda, a bay off the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of Panama. Two wooden boats, each about the size of a canoe, float in the blue water with the apex of the canoes close to the camera and the sterns fanning out left and right in opposite directions. Each canoe holds two shirtless boys, ranging in age from 9 to 18-years old. The boys smile as they stare curiously at the sailboat in front of them, which they have paddled out to investigate.

    Curious Canoe Friends

    Bahia Honda, Panama, became one of the most memorable anchorages of our Pacific cruise.  The howler monkeys on shore sounded like gorillas.  No photos of the gorillas, but these inquisitive boys paddled up for a look.  Bekki discovered from the boys that a small store was located at a nearby village—where she bought a cake mix for my 48th birthday.  Transparency taken with a Leicaflex while cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • Looking southwest and down the street from the center of brick-paved First Street in downtown Fort Myers, both curbs diminish toward the vanishing point almost 1-mile distant. Streetlamps in front of 30-foot palm trees line the avenue and illuminate Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza and Cabos Cantina in the foreground. The street is completely empty as the black sky overhead slowly fades to dawn. At the end of the street, and in the center of the photograph, High Point Place, a 33-story high-rise condominium, faintly catches early rays of the rising sun.

  • Horizontal photo of an abandoned 1950s truck on the island of Maui, Hawaii taken from the right front side of the vehicle, about 10-feet distant. The truck’s surface is covered with rust. Some would-be graffiti artist has spray painted various random designs on the front grill, hood, and cab—stars, circles, swirls, and stripes—with yellow, blue, green, and red paint. Both headlights are long gone, as are all the tires.     Hand Made Cigars

    Hand Rolling Cigars

  • Off the forward bow of our observation boat, a Hobie 16 catamaran under full sail hikes up out of the water in front of us. Leaning heavily to port, its forward starboard pontoon flies 4-5 feet in the air out of the blue Gulf of Mexico. Only the forward part of the white port-side pontoon is visible—the aft is buried deep in the water as the Hobie jets past us at 15-20 knots. The cat’s black mast leans 45-degrees to port, jib and mainsail stretched tight in the wind. The sailor closest to me in blue hikes out over the starboard side of the pontoon. His companion in yellow leans further out to starboard, tethered with a safety harness that keeps him from flying off the boat.

    Hiking Out

    The 22nd Hobie 16 World race was held on Captiva Island, Florida, on November, 2019.  Sailors hike out to windward to counter the force of the wind on the sails during one of the races.  The starboard pontoon is about 5-6 feet out of the water.

  • This landscape layout photo shows a street scene in Huatulco, Mexico. At the bottom of the image, we see the street, just above which there is a 9-inch curb and sidewalk. The back of the sidewalk intersects with an orange stucco wall at about 1/3 of the image height. A leafless tree trunk extends from the middle of the sidewalk up out of the top of the frame, branching into three smaller trunks in the upper third of the photo. On either side of the tree trunk two men lie asleep on their backs. They lie parallel to each other at an angle to the sidewalk: heads to the left, toros stretching to the curb where their knees bend above the edge, with their feet planted on the street. Street, curb, sidewalk, and tree are all a similar shade of gray. Yellow leaves have blown into the corner of the street and curb. A bright shaft of light spills down just behind the tree, highlighting the orange stucco wall. It’s a peaceful afternoon siesta in Huatulco.

    Huatulco Siesta

    Walking around Huatulco, Mexico, one afternoon, I turned the corner to find two men taking a sidewalk siesta in the afternoon heat.  This was one of those photographer moments when panic struck: can I get the camera up, shutter speed set, lens focused, and get the shot off before they stirred?  Yes!  Was it all that time behind the lens that paid off?  Probably not.  They were really zonked out.  (Or maybe a little bit of both.)  This is one of my favorite images from Mexico.  Image made while cruising Mexico in our sailboat 2000.

  • Inn and Spa at Loretto, Santa Fe

    Inn at Loretto Adobe Geometry

    The Inn and Spa at Loretto is located on the Old Santa Fe Trail, just southeast of downtown Santa Fe. The hotel's abstract geometric adobe block architecture, punctuated with brown metal gutters that look like wooden support beams jutting out from the walls; and the shadows from the morning sun, caught my attention.

  • This vertical (layout) photo shows a Kuna Yala woman in the Guna Yala region of Panama. Sitting in the bow of an old dugout canoe she faces astern, from where the photo was taken. Her red scarf covers black hair as she stares intently at the camera with an expressionless face.     Kuna Canoe Guest

    The San Blas Archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Panama, is home to the Kuna Yala—an indigenous people that inhabit its 365 coastal islands.  The only way to truly experience the islands is by sailboat, and we sailed them for a month.  They sell fruit, vegetables, and handmade mola textiles to the cruisers.  Women wear mola blouses with patterned skirts, red and yellow head scarfs, arm and leg beads, long black lines down the nose, and often a gold nose ring.  Taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • Vertical (portrait) image of the 110-foot La Paz Waterfall in Costa Rica’s Alajuela Province. The whitewater waterfall is framed in the center of the image surrounded by lush green tropical forest. An observation deck can be seen to the upper right from where the falls starts. A timed exposure blurs the water falling into a dark blue-green pool at the bottom which is covered by foam and mist from the impact of the falling water.

  • This horizontal landscape photo shows a sunset in the Guna Yala region of Panama. Taken from the deck of an anchored sailboat, ocean comprises the lower 1/5th of the image.   • Leaning Windward

  • Horizontal landscape scene on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Taken from the top of a hill, the photo provides a sweeping view of pineapple fields in the foreground and the island of Molokai on the distant horizon. Five distinct horizontal bands stripe across the image. Deep green pineapple fields, interlaced with terracotta colored access roads, comprise the lower third of the photo. Six tall palm trees form a tight cluster on the edge of the fields in the left third of the image half a mile away. Above the pineapple fields the blue Pacific Ocean, freckled by occasional tiny whitecaps, forms the straits between Maui and Molokai. In the upper third of the image, Molokai’s bluish-gray mountains—the world’s highest sea cliffs—rise from the ocean to reach an altitude of over 3,000 feet. Thick white cumulous clouds hover at the crest of the mountain ridgeline. Light blue sky forms the final band of color at the top of the photo.

    Maui Pineapple Fields Forever

    Pineapple cultivation used to be one of the largest industries on Maui.  However, many pineapple businesses closed in the 2000s.  Although there has been a resurgence in pineapple farming with hybrid grafting techniques, scenes like this one from 2000 have largely disappeared.

    Wall of colorful Mayan textiles hanging in a market in Chichicastenango, Guatemala.  This image taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat from 2000-2001.  We rented a car in Guatemala City and drove to the city of Antigua and the surrounding area, including Chichicastenango.  I titled this "Mayan Spirits" not only because of the Mayan stories and themes embedded into this wonderfully colorful embroidery—but also because you can almost feel the ancestral spirits everywhere in this magical country.

  • This landscape photo, from the Guna Yala region of Panama, shows dark powder blue water below the horizon, in the middle of the image; and a similarly dark powder blue sky—all through the filter of an imperceptibly light fog. In the middle of the photo, at the horizon line, a small round island is visible. The island is 150-200 feet away, and maybe another 100-feet in diameter. A cluster of dark green and dark teal palm trees rises from every inch of the island, 50-60 feet high. Intersecting the lower left third of the image we see a dugout canoe which is almost parallel to the lens.   • Bright blue sky frames the upper 2/3s of this landscape image. In the lower 1/3 of the image we see blue-green water from the Gulf of Mexico to the left; and a sandy beach to the right. Wave action has dampened the sand at the bottom of the image and to the right further up the beach. 60 feet away 20 Hobie 16 catamaran sailboats are lined up down the beach ready to launch for a race. Every sailboat has the same bright orange mainsail with a white palm tree and darker orange sunset on top of a 3-foot white strip along the bottom of the sail. The masts diminish down to the horizon line. The damp sand between the camera and the sailboats reflects the blue sky and orange sails.

  • A medium shot photo (landscape layout) showing a stack of 15-20 plastic multicolored woven baskets for sale at the Chichicastenango market, Guatemala. The oval-shaped baskets measure 1-2 feet in width. They have been thrown into a disorganized heap: sideways, right-side up, and upside down. Each basket’s color combination is different, and colors are wildly mixed: pink, white, red, green, yellow, orange, black, and purple.

    Plaza de la Danza

    People gather in the Plaza de la Danza (literally, "dance square") at dusk, adjacent to the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude in Oaxaca, Mexico. Families still gather socially in plazas and squares throughout Mexico. This plaza was very close to our hotel, so we walked past it almost every evening. I thought it was a quintessential Mexican scene: a plaza with families and friends adjacent to the church and lights twinkling on the distant mountain as twilight fades to night. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

  • Off the forward bow of our observation boat, a Hobie 16 catamaran under full sail passes us through the water off our bow. The forward sailor trims the orange and white mainsail and jib into a tight reach as the salt water from the Gulf of Mexico foams up and sprays behind the cat. The aft sailor grips the black tiller rod, focusing intently on the horizon. The Gulf of Mexico comprises the lower two-thirds of the frame—a deep blue backdrop to the Hobie 16 as it passes us in a “swoosh.”

  • North America, United States, New Mexico, Valles Caldera National Preserve. 13-mile-wide depression of meadows and streams resulting from a volcanic eruption 1.25-million years ago.

    Rain Squall, Valles Caldera National Preserve

    Valles Caldera National Preserve is located in the Jemez Mountain range of northern New Mexico. The volcanic eruption that occurred 1.25-million years ago left behind a 14-mile wide volcanic caldera.   • We see a close-up stack of colorful, loosely woven hammocks for sale at a market in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. You cannot, however, actually see that these are hammocks. We only see brightly colored cotton 4-inch stripes of light blue, yellow, hot pink, navy blue, mauve, red, orange, bright blue, and coral. The woven threads swirl and bend into multicolored patterns, waiting for hammock buyers to pass by.

Extremely fine detailed albrije patterns completely cover the bull's skin. Colorful patterned strips outline the mouth, nose, eye, and horns. Circular patterns radiate from the chest, side, and hump on the back. These intricate patterns include minute chevrons, diagonal lines, dots, smaller circles, dashes, and stripes in colors of red and orange with accents in yellow and blue.     Red bull alebrijes carving in the Isaias Jimenez’s studio located in the small town of Arrazola, about 4-miles southwest of Oaxaca.  Isaias continues the Oaxacan alebrijes style created by his father Manuel Jiménez Ramírez (who has his own Wikipedia page). Alebrijes are a style of brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of imaginary and mythical creatures. Bekki and I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, February of 2020 with my sister and brother-in-law who organize cultural trips to Central America and Mexico.

  • Horizontal landscape of the backcountry road to Hana on the island of Maui, Hawaii. We look down an empty, deep lavender gray, two-lane country road which extends across the bottom left side of the image. The road curves to the right around a bend several hundred feet away in the center. Dark blue mountains, tinted purple, cut across the horizon—their ridgelines reach up into heavy gray overcast clouds. The mountains dip down slightly where the road turns around the bend, forming a wide V-shaped skyline. Tall pale mint-colored grass meadows line both sides of the road. On the right side of the photo, a steep hill, covered in multiple shades of pastel green grass, climbs up from the road into the cloudy sky. Several deciduous trees have grown through the thick grass carpet. The scene is one of quiet solitude awash in soft grey, green, and purplish-blue hues.

    Road to Hana

    During one of our many trips to Maui we rented a car and drove the back road to Hana, along Maui's north shore—including its 617 turns, 59 bridges, and over 52-miles of mostly dirt road.  This pastoral scene from the Hana Highway depicts Maui's serene landscapes. I love the quiet pastel mood of this photo.

  • Horizontal landscape photo taken from the cockpit of a 43-foot sloop sailing off the coast of Dominica in the West Indies. We look over the yacht’s port side, at a 45-degree angle, across the 2-foot teak deck, underneath two chrome stanchions which form an inverted V-shape, past the winch to the blue ocean and verdant green coastline of Dominica.   • This portrait landscape photo is taken from the ridge of a steep mountainside on the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean. A stone wall on the left side of the image, which is perpendicular to the camera, follows a two-track road, just below it, off into the distance. Bright green grass in the middle and on both sides of the two-track, provides a series of stripes in the foreground. The mountainside disappears down to the right through palm trees and jungle foliage. About half a mile away another mountain peaks in front of a bright blue sky.     Saint Lucia Mountain Road

    A mountain road on the island of Saint Lucia, part of the Lesser Antilles.  Nothing exceptional about the location—there are millions of similar views throughout the Caribbean.  I just really liked all of the different verdant shades of green; and the composition, with the stone wall and two-track road leading off to the mountain.

  • This landscape photo, from the Guna Yala region of Panama, is taken from the perspective of standing on an island beach. In the lower 1/5 of the image we see a small flat wave receding from a dark mauve colored sand. The edge of the water ripples and foams as it pulls away from the beach. Above the receding wave, up to the horizon line in the middle of the photo, various shades of teal-colored water wrinkle from a soft breeze. In the middle of the photo, about 150-feet away, we see a ketch at anchor, its bow facing left into the wind. The setting sun, which is off camera to the right, illuminates the port side of the yacht in a soft golden light. Directly behind the sailboat, and perhaps another 100-feet distant, a small island with dark palm trees provides a backdrop to the bow, stern, and top of the glowing sailboat. A blue sky peeks through many clouds in the top half of the image. Clouds on the right side of the photo are also illuminated by the setting sun, which accents the blue sky with shades of gold, yellow, gray, and lavender.

  • Shipwreck. This image is a medium landscape photo of a tiny island in the Guna Yala region of Panama. The island, covered in white sand, is about 50-feet long. A lone green palm tree with six palm fronds juts out of the sand 15-feet into the air. A woman sits on a bleached-out log to the left and slightly in front of the palm tree—her head buried into her arms which rest on her knees. Her medium-length blond hair covers her face. Several hundred yards in the distance we see a large container ship, listing to port, that has run aground onto a reef.

At the top of the image we see the polished silver painted side curve of the vehicle’s long hood. The middle 3/5s of the image shows silver chrome horizontal trim framing the top and bottom of two metal mesh grills with ¼-inch gaps.     Skyway Bridge

    The Sunshine Skyway Bridge spans the southern tip of St. Petersburg, Florida, with Terra Ceia on the south side of Tampa Bay.  Here, I captured the cabled support systems of the bridge's sails with a backdrop of yellow-cast clouds after the sun had set.

  • A horizontal photo of Pedro Berro, owner of Cuban Tobacco Cigar Company, who sits in front of his store in Little Havana, Miami. As he smokes one of his cigars, his right elbow rests on a square table with the name of the store visible on the surface. His right hand holds a dark, fat, ash-laden, lit cigar inches below his chin. He stares at a 45-degree angle toward the right side of the image as he exhales a small cloud of dense white smoke. Behind him, through the glass window of the storefront, visible above Pedro and to the left, a full-size wood carving of a man sits facing backwards on a simple chair. The man rests his right arm on the top of the chair as his left arm, bent at his left elbow, holds a wooden cigar to his mouth. The statue’s pose, actions, and direction of his gaze almost perfectly mirror Pedro. We see additional cigar-related paraphernalia in the window adjacent to the statue: a B&W photograph of another man smoking, what appears to be the straw hat of the man in the photo on the surface below, and another, smaller, wooden statue of an Indian chief with full headdress holding a cylindrical collection of cigars in his right hand. The Indian stares off in the same direction as Pedro and the other statue.

    I shot several images of the Cuba Tobacco Cigar Company during a shooting trip to Little Havana in Miami. The store owner takes a break to enjoy one of his own cigars . Little Havana is a neighborhood in Miami that is home to many Cuban exiles. The neighborhood is known for Cuban culture, food, and cigars.
