    Wall of colorful Mayan textiles hanging in a market in Chichicastenango, Guatemala.  This image taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat from 2000-2001.  We rented a car in Guatemala City and drove to the city of Antigua and the surrounding area, including Chichicastenango.  I titled this "Mayan Spirits" not only because of the Mayan stories and themes embedded into this wonderfully colorful embroidery—but also because you can almost feel the ancestral spirits everywhere in this magical country.

  • Tikal, Guatemala. The Temple of the Giant Jaguar, fills the photo from the perspective of standing at ground level 200-feet distant, looking up 180-feet up the face of the steep pyramid to the high roof comb. Blue sky and white clouds provide a backdrop for the upper 2/3s of the temple, which is framed by green trees on both sides. Ten visitors walking along the base of the pyramid appear miniscule.

  • Tikal, Guatemala. Temple II (Temple of the Masks) fills the photo from the perspective of standing at ground level looking at the pyramid’s left-front corner.   • Taken from the deck of an anchored sailboat, we look six feet down to the blue waters of Bahia Honda, a bay off the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of Panama. Two wooden boats, each about the size of a canoe, float in the blue water with the apex of the canoes close to the camera and the sterns fanning out left and right in opposite directions. Each canoe holds two shirtless boys, ranging in age from 9 to 18-years old. The boys smile as they stare curiously at the sailboat in front of them, which they have paddled out to investigate.

    Bahia Honda, Panama, became one of the most memorable anchorages of our Pacific cruise.  The howler monkeys on shore sounded like gorillas.  No photos of the gorillas, but these inquisitive boys paddled up for a look.  Bekki discovered from the boys that a small store was located at a nearby village—where she bought a cake mix for my 48th birthday.  Transparency taken with a Leicaflex while cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

    30 Knots in the Gulf of Chiriqui

    This is one of my favorite photos from my 3-years of cruising the Pacific on our Hallberg-Rassy 42, 'Andante.'  We were sailing in flat seas in the Gulf of Chiriqui as we made our way toward the Panama Canal.  Suddenly, wind and seas perked up with no clouds anywhere.  My friend and accomplished sailor, Chris Brown, on a close reach as the sun set on the horizon.  Transparency taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • Leaning Windward

  • This landscape photo, from the Guna Yala region of Panama, is taken from the perspective of standing on an island beach.   • This landscape photo, from the Guna Yala region of Panama, shows dark powder blue water below the horizon, in the middle of the image; and a similarly dark powder blue sky—all through the filter of an imperceptibly light fog.   • We see a close-up stack of colorful, loosely woven hammocks for sale at a market in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. You cannot, however, actually see that these are hammocks. We only see brightly colored cotton 4-inch stripes of light blue, yellow, hot pink, navy blue, mauve, red, orange, bright blue, and coral. The woven threads swirl and bend into multicolored patterns, waiting for hammock buyers to pass by.

  • A close-up landscape layout photo of handmade maracas clustered together in a public market in San Salvador, El Salvador. The maracas are made from small round gourds, about 4-5 inches in diameter. Each set of maracas has been carved with matching patterns (zigzags, pinwheels, nested arcs, clouds, and cactus leaves) and painted red with accent colors of dark lime green, dark teal, dark blue, and deep purple. Red wooden handles have been attached to each gourd. We can only see the maraca heads in the photo except for two maracas paired together vertically in the left third of the image—the maraca heads at the top of the image, and the handles at the bottom. This pair rests on other maraca heads underneath. Both red maracas have been carved with the words “El Salvador,” which have been painted in a dark blue around a carved-out background painted white.

  • This portrait landscape photo is taken from the ridge of a steep mountainside on the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean. A stone wall on the left side of the image, which is perpendicular to the camera, follows a two-track road, just below it, off into the distance. Bright green grass in the middle and on both sides of the two-track, provides a series of stripes in the foreground.     Saint Lucia Mountain Road

    A mountain road on the island of Saint Lucia, part of the Lesser Antilles.  Nothing exceptional about the location—there are millions of similar views throughout the Caribbean.  I just really liked all of the different verdant shades of green; and the composition, with the stone wall and two-track road leading off to the mountain.

  • This portrait landscape photo is taken from the side of a mountain at about 2,500 feet of elevation on the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean. It looks out to the two pitons (ancient volcanic plugs) in the upper center of the photograph, perhaps a mile or more away. At the bottom of the image, we see multicolored rooftops of the town of Soufriere in the valley. On the right side of the photo, Soufriere Bay blends seamlessly into the Caribbean Sea and a blue sky overhead.     A World Heritage Site, the two Pitons are mountainous volcanic plugs on the island of Saint Lucia.  As we wound our way down the road I asked our driver to stop when I spotted this composition, with the town of Soufriere in the foreground framed by the Caribbean Sea in the background.

    This was actually the stairway to the locker rooms at the Acapulco Yacht Club.  But 'Stairway to Heaven' sounds a bit more evocative.  Every morning, light flooded the top of the stairs, amplifying the orange walls and carpet.  Love those Mexican colors.  Image made while cruising Mexico in our sailboat 2000.

  • This landscape layout photo shows a street scene in Huatulco, Mexico. At the bottom of the image, we see the street, just above which there is a 9-inch curb and sidewalk. The back of the sidewalk intersects with an orange stucco wall at about 1/3 of the image height. A leafless tree trunk extends from the middle of the sidewalk up out of the top of the frame, branching into three smaller trunks in the upper third of the photo. On either side of the tree trunk two men lie asleep on their backs. They lie parallel to each other at an angle to the sidewalk: heads to the left, toros stretching to the curb where their knees bend above the edge, with their feet planted on the street.     Huatulco Siesta

    Walking around Huatulco, Mexico, one afternoon, I turned the corner to find two men taking a sidewalk siesta in the afternoon heat.  This was one of those photographer moments when panic struck: can I get the camera up, shutter speed set, lens focused, and get the shot off before they stirred?  Yes!  Was it all that time behind the lens that paid off?  Probably not.  They were really zonked out.  (Or maybe a little bit of both.)  This is one of my favorite images from Mexico.  Image made while cruising Mexico in our sailboat 2000.

The sun, visible as a bright pinpoint just left of center on the horizon, 1/5th from the bottom of the photo, burns through a micro strip of dark gray clouds just at the ocean’s edge. The setting sun casts a golden sheen across a black-teal almost waveless Gulf of Mexico.     Naples Beach Sunset, 2018

    Appalachian Approach

    We drove to Amicalola Falls State Park while visiting friends who rented a cabin in Ellijay, Georgia.  This image was taken on the trail from the lodge up to the falls.  Here you will find the southern terminus of the 2,200 mile Appalachian Trail.

  • A tight vertical photo looking up from the base of the waterfall to the top of Amicalola Falls, at the Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia. The camera angle looks upward to the height of the falls about 150-feet away. A ¼-second exposure blurs the water as it cascades down from the upper left-half of the image to the right half in the middle, filling the full camera frame at the bottom. Green foliage and slick black rock surfaces frame the tumbling waterfall around the falling water.

    Amicalola Falls

    We drove to Amicalola Falls State Park while visiting friends who rented a cabin in Ellijay, Georgia.  This vantage point of the 729-foot waterfall requires walking down 600-stairs to the base.  Going down is not the problem.

At the top of the image we see the polished silver painted side curve of the vehicle’s long hood. The middle 3/5s of the image shows silver chrome horizontal trim framing the top and bottom of two metal mesh grills with ¼-inch gaps. Two shiny 3-inch corrugated chrome metal pipes protrude from the top grill mesh. The pipes sweep backwards at a 20-degree angle and re-insert into the large silver painted fender. Protruding from the metal dashboard and supported by a small 2-inch diameter cylindrical post, the large white round wheel shows severe, deep cracks and flaking from age. In the upper right corner of the image the original thick glass windshield has broken in half vertically. Large rust spots pockmark the once white metal dashboard.   • Horizontal landscape of the backcountry road to Hana on the island of Maui, Hawaii. We look down an empty, deep lavender gray, two-lane country road which extends across the bottom left side of the image. The road curves to the right around a bend several hundred feet away in the center. Dark blue mountains, tinted purple, cut across the horizon—their ridgelines reach up into heavy gray overcast clouds. The mountains dip down slightly where the road turns around the bend, forming a wide V-shaped skyline. Tall pale mint-colored grass meadows line both sides of the road. On the right side of the photo, a steep hill, covered in multiple shades of pastel green grass, climbs up from the road into the cloudy sky.     Road to Hana

  • Horizontal landscape scene on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Taken from the top of a hill, the photo provides a sweeping view of pineapple fields in the foreground and the island of Molokai on the distant horizon. Five distinct horizontal bands stripe across the image. Deep green pineapple fields, interlaced with terracotta colored access roads, comprise the lower third of the photo.     Maui Pineapple Fields Forever

    Pineapple cultivation used to be one of the largest industries on Maui.  However, many pineapple businesses closed in the 2000s.  Although there has been a resurgence in pineapple farming with hybrid grafting techniques, scenes like this one from 2000 have largely disappeared.

  • Vertical zoomed photo of Trafalgar falls on the island of Dominica in the West Indies. A strip of white sand, with shadowed splashes from the overhead palms, anchors the lower fifth of the image. Beyond the sand beach we see the light-turquoise Caribbean Sea—with a narrow strip of dark blue on the horizon where the waves break over distant coral reefs. The bridge’s distinctive cable-stayed supports rise like two gigantic sails 250-feet high over the 180-foot bridge height on the right two-thirds of the image. (Total height 430-feet.)     While exploring Chicicastenango someone in the village informed us of a shaman couple that were performing a Mayan ceremony up on the hill.  Following a nearby trail, we found this husband and wife, and they allowed me to photograph them.  When I motioned to the husband to 'smile,' he lit up.  Husband and wife are a diptych.  Transparency taken while we were cruising Central America in our sailboat 2000-2001.

  • Taken from a drone at night hovering at 30-feet over Ocean Boulevard in South Beach, Miami, the Colony Hotel and Boulevard Hotel fill most of this landscape image. Baby blue lights illuminate the Colony’s façade, and blue neon outlines the letters on the hotel’s inverted-T sign, with the word ‘Colony’ reaching vertically from the second story to the roof.   • Looking southwest and down the street from the center of brick-paved First Street in downtown Fort Myers, both curbs diminish toward the vanishing point almost 1-mile distant. Streetlamps in front of 30-foot palm trees line the avenue and illuminate Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza and Cabos Cantina in the foreground. At the end of the street, and in the center of the photograph, High Point Place, a 33-story high-rise condominium, faintly catches early rays of the rising sun.

  • A drone, hovering 100-feet or more at night, looks west over the Breakwater Hotel’s blue vertical backlit sign and roof, at the bottom of the image, to Miami’s skyline over 3-miles away. Buildings and rooftops lit from the outside—many with illuminated windows—compose the lower 2/3s of this landscape image. Just beneath the black sky at the top of the image, Miami’s high-rise architecture fills the horizon with hundreds of tiny neon and window lights from the buildings on the skyline.

    Elaborate lighting systems illuminate South Beach's Ocean Drive at night. This is one of a series of drone shots which required three separate trips to South Beach.  The shots were technically difficult because of pedestrians, vehicles, and stiff breezes off of the Atlantic Ocean.  This shot looks west to the Miami Skyline above the Breakwater Hotel.
